JAGUARS HEAD COACH DOUG PEDERSON
POSTGAME MEDIA AVAILABILITY
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2022
Q. Doug, just how big was the win in your opinion?
DOUG PEDERSON: Huge. We’re just looking for one more point, right? We’re just looking for guys to
make plays. We’re just looking for opportunities, and I think all of that came through today in this game,
and this is a great team win.
Q. What did you see out of QB Trevor Lawrence today?
DOUG PEDERSON: You know what, I thought he played solid. He played within himself. You know, he
really managed the offense, the situations, made some tough throws, got out of some tough throws, got
out of some sack situations, ran hard. Just second half third downs, you know, making some big, big
throws there. And [he] just took a step in the right direction. That’s all you can ask from your
quarterback.
Q. What was the message at halftime for Las Vegas Raiders WR Davante Adams, and how impressed
are you with what you guys did in the second half holding him to one catch for zero yards after he
really had his way with you guys early on?
DOUG PEDERSON: Yeah, first half obviously he had some big plays there. You know, we just regrouped
at halftime. I don’t think there were a ton of changes, quite frankly. The guys were in position in the
second half. Listen, that’s part of what we’re trying to teach these guys here and how to win and to stay
within themselves— just do their job. In the second half they did that, and they got a great pass rush.
We had our chances at some interceptions –we have to work that, obviously. Just a really good
defensive performance in the second half.
Q. You’re down 17-0 in a lot of scenarios. There could have been panic, but this team that you elected
to stay with the run. Just your thought there. And what did you learn about this team that in some
cases could have gone south? But obviously that wasn’t what happened.
DOUG PEDERSON: Yeah, it’s interesting. When you’re in games like this, you look at that opening drive
and really went down the field mix of run, mix of play pass. Obviously, we had the miscue with the
fumble. There were some opportunities even after that. We didn’t get off the field. We gave up the big
touchdown to Davante [Adams] there. It wasn’t like we were far off, right? Our guys had a lot of
confidence on the sideline. Coaches, we stuck to the game plan and really just trusted our players
honestly and kept putting them in those situations to be successful. Didn’t ask Trevor to do anything
other than what he has been coached to do. Can you do that all the time? I don’t know if you can, but
today it worked. Proud for the guys.
Q. A win like this, you talk so much about learning how to win. Is this the first step in that, or is this
something that just kind of validates everything you’ve been saying to them, and can you put too
much emphasis on it?
DOUG PEDERSON: Well, you don’t want to put too much emphasis on wins and losses, but this is a step
in the right direction. We’ve been really close, as you guys know, over the course of the season. It’s great
to see our team finish. It’s great to see our defense finish, offensively in the second half make plays. I
mean, special teams the great return to start the second half. It’s all steps in the right direction, right?
It’s something now that we can build upon. Guys have that feeling, kind of the taste in their mouth.
We’ve just got to capitalize and keep improving.
Q. DE Dawuane Smoot, the day he had today, especially coming up big late, how big was that for him?
DOUG PEDERSON: It was big. It was big. He is a great player, and he has tremendous skill and ability and
somebody that we lean on heavily to get after the passer. He did a nice job. You know, [he] did a great
job of just sticking to his game plan and making some big plays, especially here at the end.
Q. This is the third straight game that you all have led in the fourth quarter, and you were able to
come away with a victory today. What specifically were some things that your team did today taking
from the lessons from the last two weeks and applied them here?
DOUG PEDERSON: I think it’s just a matter of just continuing to build on the game plan that was giving us
success in the second half. Trevor [Lawrence] was in a good spot. The running game was in a good spot.
We just had to continue. My mindset in those situations is you still have to be aggressive and get first
downs, right? The game is not necessarily over. You are only up four at the time, and you still have to
get first downs and try to score as many points as you can. So that’s always going to be the mindset late
in the game, especially in games like this. It was really good for our guys to finish this game that way and
really for Riley [Patterson] to — I know he missed the one, but he come back and hit a bigger kick in my
opinion there at the end. Just goes to show I think how this team is really embracing each other. They’re
taking the coaching to the field. Just a great sign of that.
Q. How important was it today to get RB Travis Etienne that kind of workload to show that he can be
the bell cow back?
DOUG PEDERSON: Well, we know obviously that he is going to be the guy, so we’ve just got to continue
to find ways to get him touches in this game and really every game moving forward. As a staff we’ve got
to be smart in how much we use him. I don’t want to wear him out, but at the same time we’re going to
keep using him in situations to be successful. He made some tough runs in the second half. He’s still
learning. That’s the thing that I’m excited [about], he is still learning how to run the football and where
to run it sometimes. But he has so much talent that you hate for him to come off the field, especially in
moments of crunch time.
Q. You rotated CB Tre Herndon and CB Montaric Brown a lot this game. What went into the decision
to do that, and what you did think about how the rookie did today?
DOUG PEDERSON: Yeah well, the reasoning obviously is just in situations like this where to get Buster
[Montaric Brown] some opportunities to play and get him comfortable with the way he can play, and it’s
really nothing against Tre [Herndon]. It’s just a matter of having everybody available. I thought both of
those guys did a nice job. Buster in particular made some plays. It will be really good for him to go back
and watch this film tomorrow and really grade himself. Just to see overall how well he played and if
there were anything that he might have left out there on the field.
Q. QB Trevor Lawrence coming off maybe his toughest game to respond how he did down 17-0 with,
as you said, just third down pass after third down pass, what does that mean for him?
DOUG PEDERSON: I think it just boosts confidence. It’s everything that we talk about with him and how
he can play. You know, it takes moments like this, it takes games like this for young players to really
understand sometimes what the coach is talking about a little bit. He was able to do that. It was great to
see him do that. He was in a great frame of mind all game. Never once did he show any signs of panic or
wavering, nothing like that. He showed a lot of confidence. As play caller, you want him to have the ball
in his hands because at the time, I think especially in the second half, those third down throws he was
hot and [we] wanted to get him opportunities to finish the game as well on offense.
JAGUARS QB TREVOR LAWRENCE

Q. How did it feel to get a win out of this one when the last couple haven’t gone your way?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: It felt great. Even the way we had to win to get out of this rut, I mean, [we were]
down 17-0 in the first half and just had to overcome a lot. It really took all phases. I think part of our
team made some huge plays. Offensively, [we] made some big plays. [We made] big stops, defensively.
Obviously special teams did a great job, [WR Jamal] Ag[new] and the return game, [K] Riley [Patterson]
making that kick at the end. Every phase played a part, and I think that’s what makes it great too. It’s not
like the offense or defense had to carry us for this one. It was just everybody playing together. Nobody
panicked when we got in that hole early, and obviously it feels good to win one.
Q. Do you think this game can be a launching point for you guys or a spark of figuring out how to win
these close games?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: Yeah. I mean, obviously that’s what you hope for, and I think that’s something that
we definitely learned. I think more so kind of getting over that hump as far as just that feeling of being
able to win these close games. And especially, like I said, being down 17-0 early, there was really no
panic. We knew we were going to win that game. It was kind of go-time at that point. End of the first
half, put together a scoring drive on offense. Defense, we get the ball back. Kind of the middle eight we
talk about, the end of the first half, beginning of the second half. Get the ball back with 45 seconds and
kick a field goal and then come out and score first possession of the second half, and then from there
defense stoned them in the second half. So [we were] really just playing complimentary ball. Obviously
not every play is going to go your way. There were plays today both sides of the ball that the other team
made. We had a turnover early when we were driving in the red zone, and obviously you don’t want
that. We’ll learn from that one, but stuff is going to happen in games, and you have to find ways to
overcome them. I think that’s the coolest thing is we found ways to overcome it today. It’s not like we
played perfect, but we found a way to win.
Q. What made you think when you were down 17-0, we’re going to go win that game because that
doesn’t happen very often?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: [It was] just the belief. I think the whole energy this week, we kind of knew we had
to go get this one this week. Obviously, you don’t try to put more pressure on yourselves than you need
to, but everybody knows that where we’re at right now in our season. We really have to turn this thing
around and get some wins. We felt that, and just had a lot of confidence in our prep. I know offensively
obviously we didn’t score the first three possessions, but honestly it wasn’t really anything they did that
stopped us. We just kind of shot ourselves in the foot and obviously, they made the play. We knew
offensively once we could just eliminate some of those errors early and keep a drive going, we were
going to be to be fine. We thought our plan was great, and you could see today. We were rolling, so it
was awesome.
Q. Talk about the work of the offensive line because you looked so comfortable back there today. Was
that the best game you’ve seen them play in front of you?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: I wouldn’t necessarily say that just because there’s been a lot of games this year
where I think they’ve played great. Pretty much every game I feel like they’ve played good enough for us
to win. Just pass game, run game, all those things, the guys up front, that’s where it starts. Both sides of
the ball, that’s where the game is won. Obviously, they had some really good players on the edges, and
that was challenge for us this week, and really just seeing those guys step up like they do every week
was awesome to see. Yeah, it was great. I thought we handled it well. Like I said, it’s never going to be
perfect. That team is paid to play too, and they’re going to make plays, but just kind of battling through
the adversity was awesome.
Q. What does it say about your ability to bounce back? How important is that for a young
quarterback? How is that important for your confidence and then just development-wise?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: [It’s] just a part of growing. You know, some of the Raiders guys were, like, ‘Man,
why do you have to get the ball out so fast?’ I’ve had to learn the hard way. I’ve learned my lessons.
There’s still a lot more I’m going to learn in years to come and games to come, all those things. It’s a
growing experience. But I think just for my confidence, for the team’s confidence, just for us to be able
to bounce back as a whole and go and win this game, especially under the circumstances that we were
in early, I think it says a lot about, yeah, myself but also just this whole team. We have a bunch of
fighters and guys that aren’t going to quit. [It’s the] same thing, like I told you guys, we started 2-1 and
won those two games back-to-back, and we were playing great. It doesn’t really matter what other
people say. It’s always about us, and that’s what [Head] Coach [Doug Pederson] has been saying to us.
Obviously, we’ve had some ups and downs this season, but it’s a long season. We’re just looking forward
to being able to hopefully ride this momentum and use this juice this week. Obviously, we’ve got a big
game in Kansas City. [It’s a] great challenge for us. We’ll enjoy it today and get back to work tomorrow.
Q. Talking to S Andrew Wingard in the locker room, he described it as everybody had to kind of
surrender to what’s going to happen. Not surrender like give up, but just surrender to things are going
to happen, and we have to react. Number one, do you agree with that assessment? Number two, for
you as a quarterback, how difficult is that to be thinking of a million things but also be, like, okay, I’m
going to take it as it goes?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: Yeah, [S Andrew Wingard] Dewey has been an awesome voice in our locker room.
Some of the stuff he’s shared with us has been really good. He’s right. I mean, this game, you can’t play
tight. You can’t be worried about the next play. You can’t be worried about what happened the last play.
It’s just that specific moment and doing that over and over again for the whole game. I think that’s what
you saw today. You’re not going to win every single moment, but if you can flip the page and go to the
next one and forget the last one, that gives you the best shot to win, and I think our whole team did that
today. Obviously, there’s plays you’re always going to leave out there and you learn from those, but
yeah, that’s huge. Just not playing tight, playing loose, just being yourself, and I think most or all the
guys did that today, so it was fun.
Q. Have you felt like there’s been moments leading up to today that you yourself played a little bit
tight or maybe didn’t immediately go to the next page at times and so maybe this was growth today?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: Yeah, I think there’s always, not always, but a lot of times there’s plays, there’s a
series of plays or a few plays that you string together where you feel like you might have been thinking
about the last one or you feel like you didn’t move on quick enough from the last play, if it was a good
play, bad play, whatever it was. On the offense, we talk about it a lot. Each play is its own play and just
moving on to the next one every time. That’s what I talk about with the guys up front. We kind of
remind each other throughout the game, ‘Next play, next play.’ That’s the key, and it’s easier said than
done, but you kind of saw today what it looks like when you are able to do that.
Q. I think you had 15 completions in a row one time, but do you know that or feel that even though
you are coming in and out of series at different drives, feeling the momentum that you have?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: 100%. Momentum is so big in this game. It’s real. Everyone can feel it that’s in the
stadium. Obviously, [we] had no momentum when they went up and scored a couple of times and we
had to punt, had a turnover, whatever it was. Then when you flip that momentum and can keep it like
we were able to do today, obviously that’s huge. That plays a big part in this game. But just as far as
managing your emotions when you are on the other side of that momentum when they have it, how do
manage your emotions? How do you play each play as its own to kind of get out of that whatever it is?
Whether it’s a couple of three and outs, a couple of bad plays, missed throws, whatever it is? It’s just
how do you manage the next play? I think, myself, I feel like I did that well today, but I feel like our
whole offense and the whole unit did it well, so it was great.
Q. Do you think the early runs helped your confidence today?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: Each game is different. There’s going to be times and opportunities where I can use
my legs, and today was one of those times, just giving us some space. There were a couple of times that
they dropped a bunch of guys out underneath and took some things away, so [I] just used my legs when
I can. Yeah, that’s something I’ve talked about before. I like doing that. I like being able to affect the
game that way when it’s necessary, when it’s needed. I think it helped us today.
Q. Was there some validation in the play calling when RB Travis Etienne Jr. score the go-ahead
touchdown on a pitch play when they were unsuccessful earlier in the game?
TREVOR LAWRENCE: Yeah, it’s the same message that I just mentioned. It’s all about us. You look at
those plays, and everyone can say this on every play, each team, it really is [that] we control what
happens. There’s all these plays, whether it’s a TFL, it’s a fumble, I mean, we control that. And it’s
something where someone missed an assignment, didn’t make the play, whatever, not a great pitch to
[RB JaMycal] Hasty on the one, that’s all stuff that that we can control, and the same thing in the
positive way when you kind of make the flip and you start playing really well. It just shows the coaching
staff how they trust us, didn’t let any of that affect the game. We just kept playing. We never shelled up
and kind of got conservative and tried to get out. We just kept playing. I think that was really cool to see
and I know the guys are fired up.
RAIDERS HEAD COACH JOSH MCDANIELS
POSTGAME MEDIA AVAILABILITY
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2022
JOSH McDANIELS: All right, well, obviously tale of two halves. We wanted to try to get off to a fast start;
thought we did that in the game then, you know, give them credit. They did a better job certainly of
making some adjustments. Changed a few things there in the second half and then really from the
opening kickoff, I thought, in the third quarter they just seemed like they were a little bit ahead of us.
Guys fought, but we got to learn how to play a full four quarter game. We have played stretches in each
game mostly where we play good football, but that’s not enough to win in this league. That’s what we’re
going to have to do.
Q. Was one of the things that they changed or adjusted was how they defended Davante [Adams]?
JOSH McDANIELS: Yeah, definitely. They gave us an element of some single coverage in the first half. I
thought Derek [Carr] made — Derek and Davante made a good play down the sideline on the one, and
then we hit them on the little gadget there on the other one, and he had some production against I
would say single coverage, and then the second half there was a little bit more split safety defense in
general. Just in general.
Q. How do you respond to that, adjust to that?
JOSH McDANIELS: We moved them. We moved them around. We had chances. Let’s not sit here and say
we didn’t have chances. We certainly had chances in the second half to complete balls to him and
anybody else.
It wasn’t like we didn’t have opportunities there. So, they didn’t like double him to the point where we
couldn’t throw the ball to him. I didn’t feel like we were as efficient in the second half. Certainly not as
efficient on early downs to try to avoid third down and long.
I felt like we were in third and long damn near the entire day when we got to third down. We got to be
more productive on the first and second downs with the opportunities, whether it’s the run game or the
passing game.
Q. That last drive, the turnover on downs before the two-minute warning, I think you guys had second
and short a couple times on the field. Was there any consideration to running the ball?
JOSH McDANIELS: Yeah, we did. We had a lot of short throws called, and ended up being an opportunity
there, I think on the left sideline. But you could run it there for sure. There is definitely an opportunity to
do that if you thought that was the right thing to do.
Just we’ll look at it and see what we did.
Q. Both those drives, that one and the last one, how did it feel with the offense going on the field?
Were you guys pretty confident?
JOSH McDANIELS: Yeah, look you want the ball back in that situation with an opportunity. Thought we
had a couple chances the second drive there to maybe get it towards mid-field.
I don’t remember exactly who the ball went to on a couple of those, but I think Davante had one and
couple times they got into the middle of the pocket before we had an opportunity to see it unfold.
Look, in that situation, no timeouts, you got to make some chunks, you know what I mean? I felt like we
had couple opportunities, but obviously didn’t capitalize on them.
Q. This is your third blown lead of 17 points. Have you seen any similarities?
JOSH McDANIELS: You know, it’s not good enough, you know what I mean? I know that. So, we got to
coach better in those situations. We got to avoid feeling like the situation is okay, you know. I don’t
sense that our team relaxes when we have that situation, but obviously that might be the wrong thing,
you know what I mean?
And so, we’ve played, like I said, some stretches of football that are good. Good enough to get ahead
and produce a lead, but that’s not what this league is about.
This league is about playing the second half just as well as you played the first half and trying to win the
game. So sometimes lessons are learned the hard way, and obviously we’ve had to swallow some
difficult ones this year, you know, but I have a lot of confidence and faith in the way that these guys will
respond. They always do.
Come down and try to have another good week of work this week back in (Las) Vegas and go back at it.
Q. You were dropping [Maxx] Crosby and [Chandler] Jones in the coverage a lot today. Is that more
than usual today?
JOSH McDANIELS: A little bit. Just there was some underneath stuff that I would say creating some
opportunities for their guys underneath, and we were trying to get in some passing lanes a little bit.
Some of the balls were coming out quicker. Obviously, he [Trevor Lawrence] was a very efficient passer
today, so I didn’t think we got to him much in the rush, and then there were some balls that were
thrown underneath that he was hitting and completing to keep them in second and one and skip third
downs altogether.
I thought he played well today. He was efficient early in the passing game certainly. Got the ball out of
his hands and found some open guys. We played zone, we played man, and he was able to move the ball
regardless of what we were doing.
Q. We are about halfway through the season now; do you feel like you’re closer to putting a full game
together now than at the beginning of the season?
JOSH McDANIELS: Certainly, it doesn’t feel like that. Like I said, I think you earn the right to do that. We
have to do it. It doesn’t matter what I stand up here and talk about or what somebody else talks about,
you know, it’s just about actions.
The National Football League is unforgiving when you let up and don’t finish games. The other team
plays as hard as they possibly can too, and they got a lot of good players and coaches over there.
They earned the right to win today, and we didn’t.
RAIDERS QUARTERBACK DEREK CARR
POSTGAME MEDIA AVAILABILITY
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2022
Q. Second half, what was the difference? What happened with the offense [referring to WR Davante
Adams]?
DEREK CARR: Yeah, I mean, we were calling certain things for him, and they were — they doubled him on
some plays too, and so we thought we saw what they were doing the first half, saw what they were
doing the second half. We felt comfortable in playing, and it was just a couple times where he would
have had big plays. I had to run out of the pocket and try and throw it to him and we didn’t hit him.
Q. What’s the feeling on the final two drives when you go on the field. It’s an area you’ve been so
successful in the past. How confident are you guys in going to be able to go down the field?
DEREK CARR: I was very confident. The main thing for me is just trying to hit my receivers. If I have to
move in the pocket or got to do something, just find hands to throw it to. Within the progressions and
all that stuff. Really just having positive plays, and having my confidence in those situations, I never feel
any different. I’m not worried ever in those.
Q. Third time you guys have blown a 17-point lead this year. Any similar stats or feelings that you can
look back on?
DEREK CARR: You know, I think there is a lot I want to say, you know, but if I’m honest, I don’t need to
say it here. There are things that will be said. There will be things that need to be addressed and all
these things. But I think as whole, the urgency part of it, after 30 minutes of football we have to learn
that the game is not over. I feel like I’ve been in this situation a lot where new coaches or this or that
and you have to teach the new guys like this is how we do it and this is the mentality. That gets tiring,
but at the same time, it’s my job. There is some of that. I’ll say that right now for those things. But there
are things in-house that we’ll talk about man to man and all that kind of stuff that could be addressed.
Q. Were the things you addressed this past week…?
DEREK CARR: I’m not going to lie, I thought they were. I felt confident. We had a really good week. But,
like we always say, having a really good week doesn’t give you a win on Sunday. It gives you a chance. If
you don’t have a good week then you have no chance. So, I thought so, yeah.
Q. What was the message to the team from the captains this week as you guys were working?
DEREK CARR: Yeah, there was stuff that obviously I won’t share based on some of the things that were
said, but really just trying to have that sense of urgency and the stamina to do to the whole time, right?
We’ve shown spurts of being a good football team but showing spurts doesn’t get you wins. We have to
do it all the time. Good teams do it all the time and we have not done it.
