Free, six-week virtual summer program, in partnership with Detroit Parks & Recreation, available to city’s youth aged 6-14 in months of July and August; registration begins Wednesday, June 17 .
DETROIT – Rooted in a commitment to building confidence and character, promoting positive values, and imparting enduring life skills, 1,000 youth across the city of Detroit will have the unique opportunity to participate in a new program from the Detroit Red Wings’ pioneering Learn, Play, Score platform. “Street Hockey in The D at Home” – powered by Chevrolet – will begin registration for city of Detroit youth aged 6-14 on Wednesday, June 17, at two Detroit Parks & Recreation locations in the city.
Building upon “Street Hockey in the D” programming originally launched within Detroit Public Schools Community District K-8 physical education classes earlier this year, the Learn, Play, Score platform is evolving during the COVID-19 pandemic to offer unique online instructional content through “Street Hockey in the D at Home.” This free, six-week virtual summer program seeks to engage 1,000 children in partnership with Detroit Parks & Recreation from July 7 – August 13.
“Street Hockey in the D at Home brings the excitement of hockey directly to where kids are right now, continuing Learn, Play, Score’s mission of establishing equitable access to various forms of the sport across the city of Detroit,” said Kevin Brown, Red Wings director of community relations & foundation. “Whether playing street hockey safely in their driveway, basement or on the sidewalk, the Red Wings are proud to offer this new virtual, enrichment opportunity for kids in the city.”
Participant registration will take place June 17-19, June 22 and June 23-24, from 8-11 a.m., at two Detroit Parks & Recreation locations that also serve as community hubs for family food pack distribution. Registrants will receive a complimentary Red Wings hat, street hockey stick and ball so their kids can participate at home. Registration locations and dates are as follows, and is limited to Detroit city residents:
Adams Butzel Recreation Complex
10500 Lyndon Street
Detroit, MI 48238
Farwell Recreation Center
2711 Outer Drive East
Detroit, MI 48234
“The City of Detroit Parks & Recreation Division is excited to partner with the Red Wings to provide Detroit youth with access to explore hockey, said Ricardo Marble, Assistant Director, Detroit Parks & Recreation. “Street Hockey In The D provides an innovative opportunity to expose kids to the sport right at home in their own neighborhoods.”
Through two engaging video modules each week, participants will learn the basics of street hockey from Learn, Play, Score Ambassador and “Detroit Ice Dreams” founder Jason McCrimmon, Red Wings players, and Red Wings TV’s Carley Johnston through a virtual Google Classroom setting. Each video will focus on street hockey skills and drills, physical activity and wellness, and hockey’s Declaration of Principles : courage, perseverance, acceptance, humility, respect, teamwork, integrity, and passion. Participants will be encouraged to complete short quizzes after each video focusing on lessons learned. After participants complete each of their quizzes, a special Red Wings mini hockey stick and goal set will be mailed to their home.
