Are Glory days of sportscar racing back?
Not unlike any other sport that views itself as a global entity, including golf, baseball and more recently basketball, stakeholders of various sportscar sanctioning bodies, individual team owners, drivers and promoters have worked for decades to find a common platform where the world’s best sportscar teams and drivers can compete on a level playing field. All sports are complicated, but motorsports set the standard in complexity given constantly evolving technology. Golf has always had common rules established by the R&A and the USGA. The rim in basketball is always 10 feet off the ground and there are five players per side no matter the country in which you’re playing.  The bases in baseball are always 90 feet apart and the pitching rubber is 60 feet six inches from home plate. AIways. If only auto racing were that simple. While the convergence of the world’s top two sportscar governing bodies – the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA), which owns Sebring and sanctions the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts, and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), which sanctions the 1000 Miles of Sebring, will not eliminate subtle differences completely between cars, it will put them on the same field.IMSA’s LMDh cars will debut at Sebring in 2024 after making their first appearance in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The WEC’s LMH, or Hypercar, class is already racing in limited form. Specific details of how the cars are similar and how they are different can best be understood by reading engineering documents or other scientific journals. You can also simply search the internet if you’re interested. What is easy to describe are the benefits for fans, teams and manufacturers. For fans it means more teams, more drivers and true international competition that will continue to build the sport on a global level. If a team competing in the prototype class races for top honors at Sebring or Daytona, they could also be in line to win at Le Mans or Monza if they choose. For teams it means a less-costly platform with common technology that gives them an even greater opportunity to represent their sponsors. A true common platform allows top teams from around the world to compete against each other and deliver value to sponsors, most notably manufacturer partners. The benefits for car manufacturers are most obvious, considering the ongoing announcements coming from headquarters of various OEMs adding their names to the list of participants. Confirmed already for either LMDh or Hypercar are Acura, Alpine, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, Glickenhaus, Peugeot, Porsche and Toyota. The rumor mill is jammed with speculation about other forthcoming announcements from nameplates with significant racing pedigrees. For 70 years fans have flocked to Sebring to see some of the most incredible cars ever built. The current and next generation of Sebring fans may soon witness the best competition in the history of sportscar racing. Are the glory days of sportscar racing back?  We don’t think so. Thanks to the efforts of many who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to find common ground and platform poised for growth, we think the future of sportscar racing will undoubtedly exceed the past – even the glory days.
