Oakland Park to improve waterfront park

From David Volz

Major improvements are on the way for J. Dewey Hawkins Landing as the City of Oakland Park moves forward with plans to enhance the waterfront spot.

These efforts will ensure it remains a favorite destination for boaters, kayakers, and outdoor enthusiasts for years to come. The dock will be repaired and revitalized to ensure it stays a safe, functional, and welcoming space.

While evaluating options for the dock, the City carefully considered removing it. However, staff determined that preserving and enhancing the dock is the best choice for the community. Removing the structure would incur significant costs and could unintentionally create safety risks by allowing access to the seawall currently being stabilized. By keeping the dock in place and investing in key upgrades, we’re prioritizing safety, functionality, and long-term sustainability. Planned Enhancements to include:

Boat Ramp – Making it easier and safer for boaters to access the water

Seawall & Bulkhead – Preserving the shoreline

Dock Structures – Restoring and improving docking options

Kayak Launch – Creating a better launch experience for paddlers

Also, City Manager David Hebert has recommended lowering Oakland Park’s operating millage rate for FY 2026 to 5.6979 mills—the lowest in 16 years and the 11th reduction in 12 years. These efforts have saved taxpayers over $21 million since 2014, while supporting major improvements to parks, facilities, and roads. The proposed $171.4 million budget balances smart growth with fiscal discipline, including a $34 million Capital Improvement Program to enhance infrastructure, public safety, and quality of life, much of it funded by grants. Public hearings on the FY26 budget are scheduled to take place:

September 8 & 17 at 6:30 p.m.

September 15 at 6 p.m.
