Oakland Park drowning prevention programs, Art Exhibit at Miami Airport, and Pompano Carribean Fest

From David Volz

Broward County has the highest number of drowning deaths of any county in Florida, and drowning is the number one cause of unintentional deaths for children 1 to 4 years of age.

Because of this fact, the City of Oakland Park placed a special emphasis on drowning prevention and safety in the summer months of 2024. In May, the City joined communities nationwide in proclaiming National Water Safety Month

At a recent meeting, the City of Oakland Park Fire Rescue Department and the Florida Department of Health (FLDOH) celebrated the City being named a Gold Water SMART Community, a statewide program and recognition from FLDOH. This coalition of leaders, including Oakland Park Fire Rescue, Public Works, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, has been working diligently to establish programs to prevent drownings

Miami-Dade Aviation Department hosts art reception

From David Volz

The Miami-Dade Aviation Department and Film Miami hosted an opening reception for And Now, Our Feature Presentation: Miami Film Posters, 1941-2024, an exhibition of 33 Hollywood film posters at Miami International Airport spanning eight decades of motion pictures shot in Miami-Dade County. The exhibition will be on display post-security at MIA’s Gate D31 Gallery until September 22, 2024, and will then be relocated to Concourse E’s arrivals level pre-security near door 11 from October 2024 to March 2025. The exhibition also includes a sizzle reel video of trailers and clips from the movies featured.

“For over a century, Miami-Dade County has been the setting for many of our most beloved movies, and I am so proud to showcase that rich filmmaking history to millions of our visitors at MIA,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “Congratulations to Film Miami and the MIA team for opening this first-of-its-kind exhibition that pays tribute to our community as one of the world’s leading movie meccas.”

The poster collection ranges from film classics such as The Godfather Part II (1974) and Lady in Cement (1968) to romantic comedies like There’s Something About Mary (1998), Miami Rhapsody (1995), and Making Mr. Right (1987). The exhibition’s chronological overview begins with the musical comedy Moon Over Miami (1941) and culminates with this summer’s release of the Bad Boys action-comedy franchise’s fourth installment, Ride or Die (2024).

Also featured in the exhibition is the crime drama Scarface (1983), whose poster design transcended its marketing role and became a pop culture symbol; the HBO Max release Father of the Bride (2022) starring Miami-raised Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan; and Moonlight, the 2016 Academy Award winner for Best Picture whose film writer and director, Miami native Barry Jenkins, shot scenes in the culturally and historically rich neighborhood of Liberty City where he was raised.
