BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University softball fell in game two of the three-game set against North Texas on Saturday. The Mean Green took the series with the 5-1 win this afternoon.
The Owls dip to 30-17 on the season and 12-8 in Conference USA play, while North Texas now stands at 28-20 and 13-7 in C-USA action.
North Texas scored first with an RBI groundout in the first inning. In the third inning, the Mean Green were threatening after a runner got to third on a throwing error. The runner from first took off, then Olivia Peterson threw up the middle to Maya Amm. Amm delivered a strike to Peterson to throw out the runner trying to steal home and keep it at 1-0.
The Mean Green tacked on two in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out, two strike double. The Owls put a run on the board in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 3-1. Riley Ennis worked a walk and was pinch ran for by Kaitlyn Cunningham. Cunningham advanced to second on a ground out, then scored all the way from second on an RBI groundout from Amm.
North Texas countered the Owls’ run with two of their own in the top of the fifth, and the 5-1 lead held up as the final score.
Lynn Gardner got the start in the circle and went four innings with the three earned runs. Ainsley Lambert took over in relief and went the final three innings with two earned runs.
Amm, Cammeo Presutti and Caryssa Orland each picked up a hit for the Owls.
GAME THREE TOMORROW
The Owls and Mean Green will play in the final game of the series and the final home game for Florida Atlantic tomorrow at 1 p.m. Prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch, there will be a ceremony to honor Joan Joyce and commemorate the naming of Joan Joyce Field.
Postgame, the Owls will honor their nine seniors in a Senior Day ceremony.
