No. 3 Temple Outlasts No. 14 Tulane, 76-72, in Triple Overtime in the Quarterfinals of American Championship

FORT WORTH, Texas –  In the first triple overtime game in American Women’s Basketball Championship history, No. 3 Temple outlasted No. 14 Tulane, 76-72, in the quarterfinals on Monday, March 11 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

With the win, Temple (20-11) advances to face No. 10 Rice in the semifinals on Tuesday, March 12 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

Tiarra East made a jumper with 2:18 remaining to give Temple a 70-69 lead. Coming out of a timeout, Rayne Tucker made a layup with 35 seconds left to give the Owls a 3-point lead. Kyren Whittington of Tulane (12-20) cut the lead to one with 30 seconds left, but East made two free throws to push the lead to 74-71 with 22.5 seconds left. After Whittington made 1-of-2, Tristen Taylor made two free throws to clinch the game.

East finished with 22 points, including 6-of-6 from the free throw line, and nine rebounds. Taylor dropped 14 points and Demi Washington added 12.

Kyren Whittington led all scorers with 31 points, while Amira Mabry recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

East made two free throws with 15.9 seconds left to give Temple the lead, but Whittington converted a pair of free throws herself with 7.8 seconds remaining to tie the game. A jumper by Washington at the buzzer bounced off to send the game to overtime.

East’s jumper with 38 seconds left in the second overtime period tied the game at 60 and sent the game to double overtime. Mabry hit a 3-pointer from the win with 21 seconds to go to give Tulane a 65-63 lead. East hit a pair of free throws with 7.5 seconds remaining to tie the game. Whittington’s jumper at the buzzer missed and the game went to a third extra session.
