No. 15 Owls Set to Face FIU in Non-Conference Rivalry Game

BOCA RATONFla–  The No. 15 Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball team (7-2) will host FIU (3-7) on Wednesday evening, 7 p.m., at the Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.

While no longer competing in the same conference, FIU has been a storied rival. No opponent has taken on the Owls more than the Panthers, with 53 matchups to their name. While FIU has the overall advantage with 28 wins to FAU’s 23, Florida Atlantic has owned the last six meetings, including a 2-0 sweep in the 2022-23 season.

This will be the final non-conference home game for the Owls.

LAST TIME OUT
The Owls came up short against No. 16 Illinois, 98-89, as part of the Jimmy V. Classic at Madison Square Garden on Dec 5. Despite the loss, it was another dominating performance from junior center Vlad Goldin, who finished the night with a career high 23 points in just 19 minutes. Junior guard Johnell Davis added 19 points (7-12 FG, 3-4 from beyond the arc) and Jalen Gaffney added 10 points and a career high 7 assists.

  • Goldin leads the team with 16.2 points per game and leads the nation with 74% shooting from the field
  • Davis is second on the team in points per game (14.8) and is first in rebounds per game (7.0)
  • Junior guard Alijah Martin’s hot stretch has seen him averaging 16.8 points over the last six games. He currently has the team’s longest streak of games with a three-point field goal at 17 and is tied for first on the team with six straight games scoring in double figures
  • The Owls have shot over 46% from the field in eight out of nine games and are shooting 50.5% over the whole season, tied for 19th in the nation
  • Florida Atlantic’s balanced scoring attack has eight players averaging over seven points per game and as a team rank 27th in the nation (84.4 PPG)

The Owls will travel to Springfield, Massachusetts to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic against St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Dec. 16. Tip off will be at 4 p.m. EST and aired on ESPNU.
