More than 10 billion minutes of Major League Baseball action were watched by fans this season on MLB.TV, the league’s out of market streaming service, for the first time in its 19-year history. MLB today released highlights from the 2021 season, the second played by the league since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With fans watching the historic season of Shohei Ohtani; outstanding achievements of young stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Fernando Tatis Jr., and Juan Soto; and great performances of veteran stars like Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper, MLB.TV registered the most-streamed season in its history.
The longest-running and most successful live streaming product in sports, MLB.TV totaled 10.5 billion minutes watched eclipsing the previous record of 7.38 billion minutes, set in 2019, by +39%. MLB.TV also recorded 141.98 million games watched, the most in the service’s history and an increase of +37% from the previous record of 101.4 million games in 2019. With an average age of 44 on MLB.TV, the baseball audience has gotten younger on the service by four years since 2018 when the average age was 48. In addition, 2021 saw the 10 most-watched days in its history, 13 of the top 15 days, the top five most-streamed games, and the 9 of the 10 most-streamed games in its history.
On television, the top game this year was MLB at Field of Dreams presented by GEICO on FOX, which averaged 5.9 million viewers making it the most-watched single regular season game in 23 years since the 1998 game where Mark McGwire hit his 62nd home run of the season.
