Michigan Native Becomes Weightlifting Champion, Setting Nine New Records

At 20 years old, Michigan native Kate Nye just became the youngest American woman to become a World Champion in the sport of weightlifting.

Competing in the 71kg category at the 2019 IWF World Weightlifting Championship in Pattaya, Thailand, Nye swept all three gold medals, breaking multiple records in the process. Her best performances include:

  • Snatch lift: 112kg – or 246.9lbs – winning gold and setting the junior world record, the Pan American record, and the junior and senior American records in the lift!
  • Clean and jerk lift: 136kg – or nearly 300lbs – winning gold!

Her gold medal winning total lift of 248kg – or 546.7lbs – was also enough to break the Pan American record and the junior and senior American records in the total. In addition to her three gold medals, she set nine records across the competition.

This competition is a critical qualifying event for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and now Nye is one step closer.
