MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today announced that the club has agreed to terms with free agent right-handed relief pitcher Pete Fairbanks on a one-year Major League contract for the 2026 season.
Fairbanks, 32, made a career-high 61 appearances with Tampa Bay in 2025, posting a 4-5 record and 2.83 ERA (19 ER/60.1 IP). He also set a career high with 27 saves in 32 opportunities, while recording a 1.04 WHIP with 18 walks and 59 strikeouts. The Milwaukee, Wis., native held opponents to a .201 batting average (45×224) in his seventh Major League season and finished the campaign ranked third among American League relievers in games finished (48), seventh in saves, and was in the 93rd pctl. among MLB pitchers in Barrel % (4.8), per Baseball Savant.
Over seven seasons with Tampa Bay (2019-25), the 6-foot-6 right-hander went 20-22 with a 2.98 ERA (85 ER/256.2 IP), 96 walks, and 317 strikeouts in 267 appearances, producing a 1.15 WHIP and converting 90 saves in 108 opportunities. His 90 saves are the third-most in Rays history, while he also ranks among the club’s Top 5 for relievers in appearances (4th, 267) and strikeouts (4th, 317). Last season, he became one of eight active Major League relievers to record at least three-consecutive 20+ save campaigns (2023-25), and the second Rays reliever to accomplish the feat.
During his tenure in the Rays organization, he made 12 Postseason appearances, including nine during the club’s World Series appearance in 2020. He produced a 3.65 ERA (5 ER/9.1 IP) with three saves during his first October nod, becoming the fifth rookie since saves became an official statistic in 1969 to have three-or-more in the Postseason.
The University of Missouri product was originally selected by Texas in the third round (258th overall) of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft and went on to make his Major League debut with the Rangers on June 9, 2019, vs. Oakland before being acquired by Tampa Bay via trade in July.
Miami’s 40-man roster now stands at 40.
