Marlins select five pitchers on Day 2, highlighted by second-round pick
Dax Fulton, the consensus top-ranked high school left-handed pitcher
MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today made five selections, all pitchers, to conclude the 2020 First-Year Player Draft, marking the first year in Club history the Marlins did not select a position player in Draft history. Miami’s first selection on Day 2 was LHP Dax Fulton from Mustang HS (Okla.) in the second round (40th overall).
Fulton, who was selected to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic, missed the 2020 season due to Tommy John surgery. The southpaw was the consensus top ranked left-handed high school pitcher in the 2020 MLB Draft.
Miami then selected collegiate arms with the following picks: RHP Kyle Nicolas (Ball State University) in Competitive Balance Round B; RHP Zach McCambley (Coastal Carolina University) in the third round; LHP Jake Eder (Vanderbilt University) in the fourth round; and RHP Kyle Hurt (University of Southern California) in the fifth round.
- Kyle Nicolas posted a 0-1 record and 2.74 ERA (23.0 ip/7 er) in four starts this season, with 37 strikeouts to seven walks, including 17 punchouts in his last start of the year.
- Zach McCambley, who was named to the 2020 All-Sun Belt Preseason Team, went 3-1 with 1.80 ERA in four starts this season.
- Jake Eder, who was ranked the 59th best prospect in the 2020 MLB Draft by MLB.com. He went 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in six appearances (four starts) this season.
- Kyle Hurt was 2-1 with a 3.71 ERA in four starts this season, holding opponents to .190 average, just two extra-base hits, and 25 strikeouts to just eight walks.
On Day 1 of the 2020 MLB Draft, the Marlins selected RHP Max Meyer from the University of Minnesota with the third overall selection. In a poll by Baseball America of amateur scouts of college players, Meyer was rated the best athlete, his slider was rated the best breaking ball, and his fastball was rated the second best. Meyer joins Hall of Famer Paul Molitor as the highest drafted players from the University of Minnesota; Molitor was selected third by Milwaukee in 1977.
In total, Miami selected six pitchers, four right-handed pitchers and two left-handed pitchers. Please find a complete list of Miami’s 2020 draft picks below. For additional information on the 2020 Miami Marlins, visit Marlins.com.
