JUPITER, FL – Ahead of the 2021 season, the Miami Marlins today announced the Minor League coaching staffs that will be headed to Triple-A Jacksonville, Double-A Pensacola, Single-A Beloit, Single-A Jupiter, Rookie-level GCL Marlins and DSL Marlins.
Triple-A Jacksonville:
Manager – Al Pedrique
Al Pedrique enters his first year with the Marlins organization as Manager for the Triple-A affiliate after spending the previous three years in the Oakland A’s Major League staff as third base coach (2019-2020) and first base coach (2018). Pedrique has seven seasons of experience on a Major League coaching staff. He was also third base coach and interim manager for Arizona in 2004, third base coach for Houston in 2009 and bench coach for the Astros from 2010-11.
Joining Pedrique on the Jacksonville staff is Pitching Coach Jeremy Powell (ninth season with the Marlins organization), Hitting Coach Phil Plantier (first season) and Defensive Coach Danny Black (fifth season).
Double-A Pensacola:
Manager – Kevin Randel
Kevin Randel is set to begin his third season as Manager for the Marlins Double-A affiliate. He spent the previous two seasons as Manager for the Jupiter Hammerheads. Prior to his time with the Hammerheads, he spent three seasons as hitting coach for Double-A Jacksonville and two years (2010-11) as hitting coach for Greensboro.
Randel was drafted by the Marlins in the 13th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft and spent eight seasons in the Club’s Minor League system. In 2009, Randel hit .253 with 12 home runs and 49 RBI with the Jacksonville Suns and was a key part of the 2009 Southern League Championship season. He also made three stints with the Hammerheads as a player (2005; 2007-08).
Randel’s Pensacola staff will include Pitching Coach Tim Norton (first season), Hitting Coach Scott Seabol (second season) and Defensive Coach Jose Ceballos (ninth season).
Advanced-A Beloit:
Manager – Mike Jacobs
Mike Jacobs, the Marlins’ first baseman from 2006-08, is entering his first season as Manager of Beloit, and his fifth season as a coach or manager in the Marlins Organization. He spent 2019 Managing Clinton following two seasons as Manager of Batavia.
Jacobs was selected in the 28th round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft by the New York Mets. He made his MLB debut with the Mets on August 21, 2005, hitting a three-run pinch-hit home run against Washington in his first MLB at-bat. He was then acquired by the Marlins on November 23, 2005 along with Yusmeiro Petit in exchange for Carlos Delgado. Jacobs enjoyed a seven-year MLB career and an 18-year professional playing career.
Jacobs’ staff in Beloit will include Pitching Coach Bruce Walton (fourth season), Hitting Coach Matt Snyder (first season) and Defensive Coach Chris Briones (third season).
Single-A Jupiter:
Manager – Jorge Hernandez
Jorge Hernandez is entering his 15th year with the organization and first as the Manager of Jupiter. Last year he was assigned to be the Manager of the Batavia Muckdogs. He spent five seasons as Infield Coordinator (2014-18) after a one-year stint as the manager of the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2013. He spent the previous four seasons as Manager of the Gulf Coast Marlins. He spent the 2008 season as the hitting coach of the ‘Hoppers. Prior to that, he was the GCL Marlins’ hitting coach in 2007. He began coaching professionally in 2004 as a hitting coach with the Pensacola Pelicans.
Joining Hernandez on the Jupiter staff is Pitching Coach Jason Erickson (fourth season), Hitting Coach Ty Hawkins (first season) and Defensive Coach Frank Moore (third season).
Gulf Coast League Marlins:
Manager – Luis Dorante Sr.
Luis Dorante Sr. is returning to the Marlins after working with the club for six seasons from 2002-07, including a three-year stint in Jupiter (2002-04) where he shared “Manager of the Year” honors in 2002 and 2003. He spent the last nine seasons as a coach and Manager in the Yankees organization. Dorante managed Rookie-level Pulaski in 2017 and 2019, winning the Appalachian League “Manager of the Year” Award in both years.
Dorante also spent four seasons with the Pirates as the Latin American Field Coordinator (2011) and Major League bullpen coach (2008-10).
Also on the GCL staff is Pitching Coach Justin Pope (second season in the Marlins organization), Hitting Coach Jesus Merchan (fifth season) and Nate Mikolas (fourth season).
Dominican Summer League Marlins:
Manager – Rigoberto Silverio
Rigoberto Silverio is beginning his first season as Manager of the DSL Marlins club after spending the 2020 season as the DSL hitting coach. This will be his 13th year in the Marlins organization, he spent 2019, 2017, 2015 and 2014 as Batavia Muckdogs hitting coach. He spent the 2018 as hitting coach for the GCL Marlins, and also served as the hitting coach for Greensboro in 2016. Prior to his time with the Muckdogs, Silverio spent two seasons as a coach for Jupiter (2012-13). He spent his first three seasons with the organization as a coach for the Jamestown Jammers.
In five seasons in the Marlins farm system, the former infielder was a career .243 hitter in 225 games.
Silverio’s staff will include Pitching Coach Esmerling De La Rosa, Hitting Coaches Nelson Prada and Emilio Linares and Defensive Coaches Cesar Diaz, Miguel Fermin and Ramon Espinosa.
The Marlins organization enters the 2021 season with Geoff DeGroot as Director of Minor League Operations, Hector Crespo as Assistant Director of Minor League Operations and Danny Henriquez as Manager of Player Development. Patrick Osborn will serve as Field Coordinator. Returning this season are Hitting Coordinators Edwar Gonzalez and Jeff Livesay, Pitching Coordinator Scott Aldred, and Outfield Coordinator Jeff Hendrix. They will be joined by new Assistant Pitching Coordinator Tommy Phelps, Baserunning and Infield Coordinator Jody Reed and Hitting Consultant Greg Colbrunn.
The Marlins finished the 2019 Minor League season with a combined 374-368 record, their first winning season since 2012. Miami is rated as baseball’s fourth best system and has five prospects in the Top 100 according to MLB.com.
