MIAMI MARLINS ACQUIRE RHP JT CHARGOIS AND INF XAVIER EDWARDS FROM TAMPA BAY RAYS

MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired RHP JT Chargois and INF Xavier Edwards from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Minor Leaguers RHP Marcus Johnson and RHP Santiago Suarez. 

Chargois (SHAY-gwah), 31, made 21 appearances (3 starts) with Tampa Bay in 2022, going 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA in 22.1 innings, with 17 strikeouts during two stints at the Major League level. He was drafted in the second round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins and has spent parts of four seasons in the Majors with the Twins, Dodgers, Mariners, and Rays.

Edwards, listed by MLB Pipeline as the Rays’ No. 4 Overall Prospect and the No. 10 second base prospect overall in MiLB, has hit .300 across four seasons in the minor leagues. Edwards, 23, played in 93 games for the Triple-A Durham Bulls in 2022, slashing .246, .328 and .350 with 5 home runs, 19 doubles, 33 RBI, and 48 runs scored. Edwards was the 38th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by San Diego out of North Broward Prep in Coconut Creek, Fla.

Prior to tonight’s deadline, the Marlins also added three pitchers to the 40-Man roster; RHP George Soriano, RHP Eli Villalobos, and LHP Josh Simpson.

In order to make room on the 40-man roster, the Marlins designated for assignment RHPs Nick NeidertJeff Brigham, and Elieser Hernandez, and INFs José Devers and Lewin Diaz.
