DENTON, Texas. – Florida Atlantic’s men’s basketball team returns from their bye week with a trip to Denton to take on North Texas on Sunday, Jan. 26. The matchup will air on ESPNU and tip off at 2 p.m. EST.
The Owls (10-9, 3-3 AAC) will look to spoil the Mean Green’s (14-4, 5-1 AAC) undefeated home record, currently at 10-0 on the season. FAU was the last team to defeat North Texas at the Super Pit back on Mar. 6, 2024, with Florida Atlantic proving victorious in the 80-76 victory. This matchup will feature the second-best scoring offense in the American Athletic Conference in the Owls versus one of the nation’s top scoring defenses in the Mean Green.

LAST TIME OUT
Florida Atlantic rallied back from a 16-point second-half deficit to defeat the Owls of Rice on Jan. 19 at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena. With the game tied at 73, junior forward Baba Miller was fouled in the low post with just two seconds remaining on the clock, sinking both free throws to give FAU the victory. Junior forward Tre Carroll led the way on all fronts, with a team-high 17 points, a career-high tying nine rebounds, and a career-best setting five assists.
ABOUT THE OWLS
- Head Coach John Jakus is in his first season at the helm of the Owls
- Since the start of December, Carroll is averaging 17.1 points per game on 55% shooting from the field, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists, while recording the first three 20+ point outings of their career. He currently leads the team at 12.4 points per game
- The Owls are 18th nationally in bench ppg (31.5)
- Florida Atlantic has recorded 15+ assists in eight of their last 11 games and are currently ranked 40th in the nation in per game average (16.6)
- A pair of Owls recently reached career milestones. Miller scored his 500th point on Jan. 19 against UAB, while in the following game against Tulane, junior guard Leland Walker became the third active player on the roster to record 1,000 career points
- Graduate guard KyKy Tandy has converted at least one three-point attempt in 18 out of 19 games and leads the team with 43 makes from beyond the arc. Only four players in the conference have more three-pointers than him
- FAU is the second highest scoring team in the AAC (80.7 ppg) and leads the conference in assists. Miller is tied for first in blocks per game (1.8) and Walker is tied for fourth in assists per game (4.2)
ABOUT THE MEAN GREEN
- Head Coach Ross Hodge is in his second season in charge of the program after spending six as their associate head coach
- North Texas is the fourth best scoring defense in the entire country, allowing just 59.1 points per game
- For the first time, Florida Atlantic will face off against former Owl Brenen Lorient, who played for FAU during their NCAA Tournament apperances consecutive tournament . The junior forward is having a career year as the first man off the Mean Green bench. During conference play, he leads the team with 16.2 points per game. In his most recent outing, he notched his first career double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, also recording five blocks
- Senior guard Atin Wright is the team’s top scorer at 13.8 ppg
- The Mean Green’s average margin of points is a league-best +10.6
