BOCA RATON, Fla. – Junior guard Johnell Davis has been named as one of 20 players to make the Wooden Award Late Season Watch List, announced on ESPN2 on Tuesday evening.
The John R. Wooden Award, one of the highest honors in college basketball, is given annually to the most outstanding player in Division I.
Earlier in the day, Davis was named as one of the 10 finalists for the Jerry West Award given to nation’s the top shooting guard. He commands the 17-4 Owls on both ends of the floor, leading the team in points per game (18.6) on 51% shooting from the field and 48% from beyond the arc, and is second on the team in rebounds (6.9), assists (2.7), and steals per game (1.6). Over the course of the season, Davis has tallied three games scoring 30+ or more, seven games with at least nine rebounds, and 12 games with two or more steals.
Since being added to the Wooden Award midseason watch list on Jan. 10, Davis’ game only continues to improve, averaging 23.2 points per game, on 54% shooting (56% from downtown), 7.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists.
Among the many other accolades Davis has earned this season include the American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, two-time AAC Player of the Week, AP National Player of the Week, and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.
With his presence on the late season list, Davis is a strong candidate to be among the 15 players who make the National Ballot for the 2024 John R. Wooden Award Men’s Player of the Year presented by Principal. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the “Elite Eight” round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2024 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Principal following the NCAA Tournament in April.
