BOCA RATON, Fla. – Johnell Davis, junior guard for the No. 20 Florida Atlantic men’s basketball team, continues to rack up several honors in the midst of a career-best season, being named one of the top 10 nominees for the Jerry West Award, announced.
The Jerry West Award is given to the best shooting guard in Division I basketball.
Davis leads the 17-4 Owls in points per game (18.6) on 51% shooting from the field and 48% from beyond the arc. He is second on the team in rebounds (6.9), which also leads all guards in the American Athletic Conference, assists (2.7), and steals per game (1.6).
Since the calendar turned to December, Davis is putting up an average of 21.9 points per game on 53% shooting from the field and 49% on three-pointers, 7.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 1.8 steals per game.
The Gary, Indiana native has earned several accolades throughout the season such as multiple AAC Player of the Weeks, AP Player of the Week, and Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week. He also became a member of both the 1,000 point and 500 rebound club, becoming just the fifth Owl to do so in program history.
Among the many standout games Davis has tallied include a 35-point, nine rebound performance to take down the then No. 4 Arizona Wildcats in a 96-95 double overtime victory, a 30-point, seven rebound outing against UAB, and most recently scoring 28 out of Florida Atlantic’s 66 points including the game-winning shot.
Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies begins on Friday, February 2nd. Fans will be able to vote through social media channels. The top player selections from the fan vote will get an additional vote towards making the next round. This list will be narrowed down to five in late February and then the finalists will be selected in late March which will be presented to Jerry West and the selection committee. The winner of this award will be presented on a to be determined date and presentation details will be announced at a later date.
