BOCA RATON, Fla. – In 2018, Dusty May took over a Florida Atlantic University men’s basketball program that hadn’t had a winning season in seven years. Fast forward to 2022, and not only has May achieved four-straight winning seasons, he is now officially the winningest coach in school history.
The Owls capped off a magnificent non-conference portion of the 2022-23 season with a tough 67-52 win over Northern Kentucky on Wednesday night. FAU continues the longest winning streak in school history, which is now 10 games, and sits at 11-1 heading into the full slate of Conference USA play, also the best start in FAU’s history.
The Owls were in a dog fight in the second half, as the Norse did not let FAU pull away as it has often times this season. With 8:32 remaining, Nick Boyd connected from 3-point range to push the Owl lead to 54-38, but Northern Kentucky battled back and shrunk the lead to 56-50.
FAU showed their poise, playing in their first close game down the stretch since Bryant on Nov. 17. Boyd, who had a big night with a team-high 15 points and shot 5-of-6 from 3-point range, hit a big triple on the fast break to bump the lead to 59-50 with 4:14 to go. On the next possession, Bryan Greenlee found Vladislav Goldin in the paint, and the FAU center threw down an emphatic one-handed dunk. Boyd delivered the dagger with 1:11 to go by way of another 3-pointer that pushed FAU’s lead to 65-52.
