Lynn Baseball Splits Marathon Doubleheader with Second-Ranked Spartans

TAMPA, Fla. – Lynn University’s baseball team surely entertained its fan base on Saturday, notching a dramatic 11-10 victory in 14 innings over the University of Tampa Spartans to earn a doubleheader split to conclude the sides’ Sunshine State Conference (SSC) weekend series. Shayne Fontana hit a go-ahead homer for Lynn in the 14th inning of game one before Jake Buxbaum cemented the victory in his sixth inning in relief.

STATS OF THE DAY:

·       Fontana combined for four hits and four RBI on the day, none bigger than his long ball which put Lynn in front for good in the top of the 14th.

·       Buxbaum (2-1) kept Tampa at bay from the eighth inning onward, allowing just one unearned run and three hits in 6.0 innings of work.

·       Alec Ojeda also pounded out four combined hits in two games, totaling three RBI.

·       Byron Murray went deep for the second consecutive day, launching a solo shot to left in his first at-bat of game one.

·       Alejandro Martinez hit a combined .400 at the dish, scoring two runs and adding an RBI in the opener.

·       The Blue and White trailed by three or more runs twice in the opener and plated three in the top of the ninth to extend the game.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

·       14 innings are the most that Lynn has played this season and are its most in a single game since a 15-inning affair against Southern New Hampshire on March 3, 2014.

·       Murray now has two home runs in his first four games as a Fighting Knight.

·       Lynn’s 56 at-bats in the 14-inning thriller are the most by any team in the SSC this season.

·       Saturday’s doubleheader spanned 8:37 of game time with game one going 5:17.

·       Fontana’s homer was his team-leading seventh of the season, which ties him for the most in the SSC.
