BIRMINGHAM – Lexxe Lipsey recorded her first career hat trick to lead UAB to a 5-0 victory over North Alabama on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Field.
Lipsey scored in the 33rd, 60th and 63rd minutes to lead the Blazers to their second consecutive victory. Regan Kommor found the back of the net first in the 28th minute and Kristen Goodroe added a goal in the 70th for UAB (3-2-0).
Keeper Anika Toth turned away three Lions shots to record her first career shutout.
Kommor opened the scoring in the 28th minute. The play was set up when two Blazer shots were turned away, but a failed clear attempt by the Lions led to Kommor finding the left corner of the goal from outside the box.
Lipsey stole the ball off a UNA defender in the 33rd minute, placing the ball in the low right corner to make the score 2-0.
In the 60th minute, Laura Zemberyova fed Betsy Ornelas on the right side. Her shot went off the post right to Lipsey who buried the ball, giving the Blazers a 3-0 advantage.
The hat trick when completed Ornelas slid the ball across the box, finding Lipsey for her third goal of the match and increasing UAB’s lead to 4-0.
The final goal of the afternoon was in the 70th minute when Zemberyova’s long pass found a streaking Kristen Goodroe, who tapped it in.
“We are very proud of the effort, attitude and execution of our team tonight,” said head coach Erica Demers. “Today was one of those games where the entire team contributed both on and off the field to a great performance. We have to fine-tune some details but excited about the win for our players today.”
The Blazer offense out-shot the Lions 22-6, 14 of those were on goal. UAB had seven corner kicks to UNA’s one.
The Blazers remain in Birmingham, but will travel across town to face Samford on Feb. 18. Kickoff at Samford Track and Soccer Stadium will be at 6 p.m. The next home match will be Feb. 26 when UAB opens the Conference USA slate against Southern Miss.
