On one thing that stands out about the Browns’ defense“Geez, one thing? I don’t know. They’re sound, they play hard, they rush hard. Obviously (Browns DE) Myles (Garrett) is a big part of that. They’re good in the backend too, they’re really good in the backend. They’re good at every spot and that’s what these good defenses typically are. And they’re no different.”

On how much he appreciated how well the offensive line played on Monday after watching the film: “Yeah, they really did. And that’s two weeks in a row now they’ve done that. And another tall test for them this week and I’m excited to see them come out and do it again.”

On what he thinks of the progress that Lions OL Tate Ratledge has made over the last couple of weeks: “Yeah, it’s been great. And it’s just reps, it really is. For any of these young guys, it’s just more reps he gets, the better he’s going to be. And I think he’s played great.”

On what Browns DT Mason Graham adds to Cleveland’s defensive front: “Yeah, he’s a good player too. Yeah, he’s a really good player. Gets off the ball fast, he’s athletic, he can do everything, he’s kind of a perfect three-technique and tough guy to block. I won’t be blocking him, but our guys will.”

On the difficulty of preparing for and playing against the tandem of a talented interior defensive lineman and a talented edge rusher: “Yeah, well certainly you can’t slide to both of them. So, they’ll line up opposite each other and it leaves somebody one-on-one and it’s our guys’ job to go win those one-on-ones. And those guys are good players, but we’ve got good players too.”

On if Lions OL Graham Glasgow’s sound play stabilizes Lions OL Christian Mahogany and Lions OL Tate Ratledge: “Yeah, it helps a ton. When he’s on it, it really helps a ton. It helps all of us, helps me a ton when he’s on it and he’s doing what he needs to do and playing well. But really above the neck when he’s able to get those points out and direct traffic a little bit up front, it helps everybody and certainly helps those guards.”

On the team working on communication last week and how he saw it come to life on the road on Monday night: “Yeah, shoot, I mean we didn’t – I don’t think we had any pre-snap penalties. Got in and out of plays pretty good, communicated well. There might’ve been one where we didn’t communicate great but that can happen on the road. But, yeah, it was a good bounce back for us from that first week of not doing that to a high level.”

On if he thought the communication issues Week 1 had to do with needing more reps with the new-look offensive line: “Sure, yeah. I think you’d like to continue to get better at it though. I think there’s still room to improve in that area. But yeah, the O-line’s starting to gel together now, you can see it. And they feel good next to each other, it seems. Yeah, I thought it was great the other night.”

On if this is as good of a two-week stretch offensively that the team has been on since he has been in Detroit: “I don’t know. Feels like it. Yeah, it’s been pretty good. Again, another tall test this week and got to try to do it again.”

On if there is anything he can do operationally as a quarterback to positively influence the team’s run game: “I mean we have a lot of plays where we call two different runs and I’ve got to get them to the right one. That’s not extremely high level, but it’s part of my job. And then some of the fakes, if I can hold a backside end with a fake, that’s another part of my job. But other than that, hand it off where it needs to be handed off and get out of the way.”

On the value of play sequencing and how the dynamic offense puts stress on the defense: “Yeah, that’s like kind of the whole thing you’d like to do is set things up throughout the game. And good offenses do that, good play-callers do that and the last two weeks certainly we’ve done a good job of that. And show them something all game and then get to something else or change tempos out of the huddle, all sorts of different things we can do. Motions, shifts, the whole thing. Yeah, it keeps defenses on their heels.”

On when he realized that the tandem of Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs and Lions RB David Montgomery could be special: “Shoot, yeah, I mean the day they got here. Really, I mean both of them. I saw D-Mo from across the field for years in Chicago and I was shocked when they let him walk. And then shoot, when we landed him it was like, ‘Holy smokes, we just got one of the best backs in the League.’ And then you draft (Lions RB Jahmyr) Gibbs, it’s like, ‘Wow, we’ve got two of the best backs in the League.’ They feed off each other, they’re both obviously incredibly hard-working and good players. But I think the energy they kind of feed off each other. One of them’s running well, the other guy wants to run well too and they’re as good as it gets.”
