BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic wide receiver LaJohntay Wester has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, as announced by The Louisville Sports Commission.
The Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is awarded yearly by the LSC to the most versatile player in college football in honor of the multi-positioned NFL Hall of Famer Paul Hornung. Wester is among 53 players named to the watch list.
Wester’s versatility has been a key that makes the Owls’ offensive engine run. In addition to his catching ability, recording 719 yards and eight touchdowns in 2022, Wester contributed on the ground game, rushing for 106 yards and an additional touchdown, and was the team’s sole punt returner. As if his offensive and special teams play weren’t enough, Wester even saw snaps on defense in ’22.
Wester enters his senior year in 2023 needing just 19 receptions and eight touchdowns to become the program’s all-time leader in both categories. He currently stands number two all-time in punt return yards.
The recognition on the watch list marks another preseason honor for Wester after he was named first-team wide receiver and third-team punt return All-AAC by Phil Steele’s Magazine. Wester also earned third team specialist and fourth team offense honors from Athlon Magazine.
The previous list of winners of the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse is filled with NFL superstars including DeVonta Smith, Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, and Odell Beckham Jr.
Wester and the Owls will open the 2023 season, the first under new Hagerty Family Football Head Coach Tom Herman, against Monmouth on Saturday, Sept. 2 at FAU Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
