OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR DARRELL BEVELL
Wednesday, August 11, 2021
(On preparing for the first preseason game this week) “We have to handle things a little bit different just in terms of who’s getting all the reps in the game, so we have to make sure that those guys are prepared. But then in practice, the guys that aren’t going to play as much, make sure that we get them work so they don’t have four days off or that kind of deal I think is important with the balance there.”
(On who will get first and second team snaps at quarterback) “We’re going to talk about it here today and tomorrow. We wanted to continue to let these guys compete out here in practice and today’s one of those days, so we have not made a decision there yet.”
(On having three games as opposed to four this preseason) “I think the important thing is to understand your team, so I think a lot of teams are going to do it many different ways. Do I have a veteran team? Do I have a young team? Who am I trying to get ready, those players? So, I think you’ll see a variety of different ways used for those situations.”
(On OL Cam Robinson and OL Walker Little) “I think all the guys that we have are competing. As far as Cam [Robinson] and Walker [Little], Cam’s really done a nice job. He’s come in and taken care of his business. We have a young rookie that’s there that can keep the pressure on, which I think is good for any of us to have that pressure applied. I think Cam has held on. We’ve moved Walker a little bit from the left to the right and that’s a challenge for any young player as well. Now, he’s back at the left, so we’ll just continue to let him grow.”
(On having Jimmy Johnson at practice today) “I just got to see him for a second. I spoke to him for a real quick second between a period and it’s going to be cool. I think he’s going to have something for us later today.”
(On the influx of wide receivers coming into the rotation) “I have a lot of respect for some of those guys, the guys that came in after camps have started. We have Jeff Cotton that came in here, we have Tevin [Jones] that came in, the list is long like you said. But they all, number noe, have been in shape which speaks volumes because as you’re out trying to prepare yourself, you can’t really prepare for the intensity that practice is. You can work out and do all those things, but that little extra that you have to go, you can’t really apply it. They’ve come in, they’ve done a great job, they’ve all kind of stood out at different moments. Tavon [Austin]’s had a nice two days that he’s been here. I think it’s been good for him that he is a veteran. He’s been in some different offenses, so some of the stuff came a little bit easier for him that he might know. I don’t think there’s any specific carry over but kind of similar plays, so he’s been able to stand out.”
(On bringing in outside voices, like Jimmy Johnson, to speak to the team) “I really don’t want to speak for Coach [Urban Meyer], so I think that’s a great question for Coach. I could answer it for you, but I’m going to let him speak for it.”
(On if he’s seen an impact on players by bringing in outside voices in the past) “For sure. I think not necessarily just the play on the field as much as preparation, mindset, those kinds of things you’re really trying to dive into to get to our young players.”
(On being confident in the players’ level of understanding of the offense) “I am now. There was a moment where I thought, I think I told you, it was starting to stack up on them. We’ve had a couple review days here and it’s been better. Today at the end of practice [it’s] not quite as good as I’d hoped it would be, but the recall and running the things that we’re doing, I think they’ve done a nice job with it.”
(On QB Trevor Lawrence) “Trevor [Lawrence]’s done well. There was two days in there, we moved him back a little bit and I think he responded. Like I’ve told you guys, he’s really into it. It’s really super important to him. He’s working hard every day. [Passing Game Coordinator] Brian Schottenheimer’s doing a hell of a job with him, so he’s in good hands that way. But the last couple days, the last four, you can kind of see him continue to make that climb again.”
(On the increase of dropped balls today in practice) “We don’t want them to happen all at once. That’s going to happen every now and then, but we’re preaching, we’re coaching against that. I think a lot of times it just comes down to focus. These guys are all professional athletes, they know how to catch the ball. But that focus, not turning your eyes away, [it’s] the little things to make those plays.”
(On balancing getting reps versus not showing too much in a preseason game) “I think it’s a good balance. We want our guys to be able to be successful, but right now we’re at an advantage. [They] don’t know exactly what we’re going to do, so we’re going to try to hold that as close as we can.”
(On RB Travis Etienne Jr.’s progression throughout camp) “He’s done a great job. I’ve been impressed with him. He’s gotten better and better. You’ve seen him in the backfield and the things that he can do. I think his speed’s shown up a couple times, so I really like where he’s at.”
(On WR Laquon Treadwell) “Laquon [Treadwell]’s really been impressive as he’s been here. I think he’s worked his tail off. With the guys that have been down ahead of him, it’s given him a lot of opportunities to be out on the field and he’s making most of the plays that are coming his way, so I like what he’s doing.”
(On the difficulty of taking a starting job on the offensive line) “I think the most important thing for us is to put the five best guys on the field. Whoever those five guys are, then those are the guys that we need to play. I think we owe it to the whole team to do that. If one of the guys that’s not in there now is able to beat out the other guys, then that guy’s going to go.”
DE/OLB K’LAVON CHAISSON

(On evaluating his progress over the last year) “Oh, I’ve tremendously progressed. As times goes on, you get more film, you get more time to study, and then you just get around vets and people who have been around the game. Like I spoke before, I talked to Roy [Robertson-Harris], Malcom [Brown], people who have been in the league. Obviously, Josh [Allen] has been here for a couple years, [Dawuane] Smoot and just people across the d-line who have kind of given me knowledge every day. Zach [Orr], Coach Tosh [Lupoi], people who have seen the league and just see how things are coming. The NFL is a copycat league, you know what I’m saying? You’re going to see it the one game, you’re going to see it the next game, like everybody is kind of doing the same thing. I’m progressing tremendously and I’m taking advantage of it.”
(On his reaction when he heard the news about Defensive Coordinator Joe Cullen) “Listen, so I loved it, don’t get me wrong, but I feel like just as a pro athlete, you’ve got to make the best of whatever situation you’re put in. You know, like changes can be made regardless of where you’re at. Thank God that I’m in this position now, but it’s just something that whatever hand I’m dealt with, I’ve got to make the best out of it.”
(On how the adjustment to the new defensive scheme has been) “How do you think it’s been? Yeah, we’re ballin’. We’re rolling out there, it’s fast. We’re coming from all different types of ways and just defense, there’s a lot of confidence coming in. I feel like it—what’s different about this year, we’re all
kind of trusting each other as far as—like everybody is trusting that I’m going to do my job, I know Shaq [Griffin] is going to do his job, Josh [Allen] is going to do his job. So, it’s getting fun out there and then especially when you’re competing out there, you’re making plays and you’re going against the number one pick who doesn’t look like no more little, [he’s] looking like a pro already. So, it’s like when you’re rushing to get to the quarterback, me and Josh are trying to compete to get back there and he’s throwing dimes, it’s like, ‘Dang, like c’mon.’ But it’s fun though, just being on the defense and being in this atmosphere right now is fun.”
(On whether he was discouraged at all learning the new position last year) “I’m not going to say I was discouraged, but I’m going to be honest, just coming from where I come from, a winning background, like I won in high school, I won in college, and then it wasn’t going our way. So, it kind of got to me a little bit, but just as the time goes on, I’ve just got to focus on the positive things. Every day I was figuring out what I can get better in, what I can take in, like, I’m not going to sit here and just be like, ‘I don’t pay attention to media.’ I see it, we’re grown, we see what everybody’s talking about. I know what I need to get better, I know what I’ve got to fix up and there’s just some things that I’ve been trying to polish up the whole time.”
(On whether he felt behind after missing a few voluntary practices during OTAs) “No, I don’t think that any voluntary work that I missed was definitely intentional. It was something that came up with either a family issue or something like that. But nothing put me behind.”
(On being invited to Von Miller’s Pass Rush Summit) “Man, I’ve been trying to get to that since freshman year in college. It meant the world to me. Being around Von [Miller], DeMarcus Ware, Maxx Crosby, like all these other players across the league who have had their success at pass rushing and doing the things
that I want to do, who [are] getting the accolades and doing whatever they need to do to help their team win. Just learning the different pieces and parts of the game, especially as a youngin’ at my age, just trying to grasp all of that now, the things that took them years to get. So, the DeMarcus Ware thing definitely threw me off because the stuff he was teaching, I was like, “Dang, I [wouldn’t] even think of that.’ So, it was wild, I loved it. Every year, I’m going to try to go. I’m not even going to lie, I’ll probably have to beg him to let me go, like, ‘Bring me back, bring me back.’”
(On whether he found himself listening or asking a lot of questions) “Oh it’s both, it’s both. Like I recorded everything they [were] talking [about]. I recorded all of that. I play it and I listen to it. It’s my profession, this nothing to play with, this [isn’t] a joke, this is how we feed our families, how we win. And I’m a big winner, so whatever it takes to win, I’m going to do. So, if I’ve got to go there and take a flight from Florida all the way to Vegas, I’m going to do it. That’s just what it’s going to have to be for the better of myself and the team. And like I said, I recorded it, I took everything down like notes and I’d just be listening to it and taking notes and even in times—I still have their numbers, so whenever I kind of need help or something, I’ll give them a call or shoot them a text to kind of see what their opinion is on it.”
(On an example of what DeMarcus Ware shared with him) “Ooh we can’t give out the secret like that. No, no, no. Shh. You can’t do that, you know that.”
(On how the offensive linemen are looking, OL Cam Robinson, OL Jawaan Taylor and OT Walker Little) “Oh they’re all looking fantastic. I mean, I feel like we all kind of see—I feel like you’re all at the practices—we kind of see the battles that we’re all having every day. There’s definitely no one-sided match, I feel like I’ll be having my days, they’re having their days. I feel like these are the best players I’m going to go against all year. Somebody you compete against every single day that knows all of your moves and every kind of tendency that you have, rather than somebody you’re going against just one time throughout the year. It’s the best that I’m ever going to get, so just going against them, kind of having the advantage and the ability to go against them every day in practice from all three top-tier tackles, it’s a blessing, I’ll take advantage of it.”
(On the evolution of OL Walker Little) “That’s my dawg, we’ll be chillin’. We went back to our high school days, we were even talking just trying to go to the same schools, recruitment wise. So, every day when we come out here, I kind of just flash back a little bit when I’m in my stance, like how it was back then. And just it kind of brings another competitive edge out of me, just as far as pride wise. We kind of went against each other back then, like I can’t lose no more, I can’t do this no more. But it [can] definitely be a battle between me and him. He’s a great player and I try to give him the best I can every day, just knowing that he didn’t get a chance to compete last year with the pandemic. So, just coming into this league, obviously he’s going to be going against some premier pass rushers as well, I want to give him the best I’ve got and just trying to give him as good of a look as possible, so when the season comes up, there won’t be any issues.”
(On how OT Walker Little has grown since high school) “A lot. I mean, he’s still the top dog. He got here, so he’s still in that 1 percent. So, Walker is still amazing, still good. Like I said, [it’s] battles between us, run blocking, pass blocking, he puts me on, he teaches me every day and I teach him some. That’s what we like.”
OL CAM ROBINSON
Wednesday, August 11, 2021
(On training camp so far) “I think it’s gone well, been able to get some productive stuff done, so it’s going well.”
(On having Hall of Famer Jimmy Johnson and former Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew talk to the team this week) “I think it just gives us a different point of view. Those guys have done some great things, Maurice Jones-Drew, Jimmy Johnson, we’ve had Michael Irvin also. So, just hearing a different perspective, a winning perspective on things, I think it’s been good for us.”
(On what the team has learned from those talks) “I think it’s based on each individual person what they take from it. If each person can just take a little gem or a little nugget from each one of those talks we have, I think that’s what we’re trying to get done.”
(On his offseason training) “I’m in good shape. I had a good offseason that began with my training, got a lot of things done. I’m just fine tuning, just keep building and keep progressing and keep getting better every year.”
(On if he disappointed the team did not get a long-term deal done) “I’ll let my agent handle that.”
(On playing this season for his future on the team) “I approach each season with the same mentality, [which is to] come out and be the best version of Cam each and every day, each week just try to get better.”
(On preparing for the first preseason game this Saturday against the Browns) “We are competing at a high level each and every practice no matter the situation if we’re three weeks away from a preseason game or four or five days away from a preseason game. [I want to] just come out as a unit. I think it’ll be good for us all to get on the field as a unit together and just start to build that camaraderie.”
(On the continuity of the offensive line and with Offensive Line Coach Warhop) “That’s been huge for us just having the same voice in the room and being able to kind of build on some of the things we have done in the past, keep elevating those things.”
(On what’s different about camp in Jacksonville this year) “Things are just different this year. Me being the guy who’s been around here for a while, been around here when we had success, been around here when we haven’t had success, it’s just a different feel. It’s hard to explain, but just the energy is different.”
(On what he thinks about the new energy and culture of the team) “That’s something I enjoy personally. I come from a winning culture, so that’s something I’m used to and that’s something that’s what’s needed honestly.”
(On his area of focus during camp) “[I’m] just working on everything, trying to keep my game well rounded and sharp, not just trying to elevate one skill, just trying to elevate them all.”
(On the hiring of Head Coach Urban Meyer) “Yeah, I was excited. I think that’s huge, guys who have done it before. Like you just mentioned the winning culture and I know he comes from that and that’s all he would accept. That was big for me, and I think that’s big for the whole organization.”
(On his relationship with OL Walker Little) “I have a good relationship with Walk[er Little].”
(On the similarities between Head Coach Urban Meyer and Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban) “I think their approach, not accepting anything but everybody’s best. If it’s not up to his standard, then it’s unacceptable. If it’s not up to what we’re trying to get done, it’s not acceptable and it won’t be accepted.”
(On which coach has the toughest training camp) “Yeah, they are all tough. My first couple camps here with TC [Tom Coughlin], those were tough also.”
