(On if starters will play this Saturday in the first preseason game) “We will play everybody.
So, how long that is, we’ll kind of determine how things are going a little bit. Everybody’s
going to play in this game.”
(On if WR/DB Travis Hunter will play offense and defense in the game) “Yep.”
(On if it is difficult to play the starters in the preseason) “No, actually, he [OL Robert
Hainsey] was one of the guys that kind of convinced me, actually. Came into the
weightroom the other day on the day off, and we talked about it, and he wanted to play. A
lot of the guys want to play. You’ve got two new systems on both sides of the ball, and the
one joint [practice] as I mentioned, so – I’m not saying it ties your hands, you can do
whatever you want – just kind of everything leans that way, to it probably being the best
thing for our team right now.”
(On his interaction with OL Robert Hainsey about the starters playing) “Hainsey. Not
convinced, but he just came up the other day in the weight room and was just, like, ‘What
are we doing?’ I’m like, ‘I’m still working on it.’ He said, ‘We want to play.’ Trevor [QB Trevor
Lawrence] as well and some of the guys, so it’ll be good.”
(On his expectations with Pittsburgh Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin) “We’re actually
going to connect today. We haven’t talked about it yet, so I’m not sure on what they’re doing
or not, but we’ll be in contact today.”
(On if it being QB Trevor Lawrence’s first year in the system makes it more important for
starters to play) “That’s right. That’s so much. We have moving parts and pieces on the
offensive line, new ones, obviously multiple different receivers, quarterback playing in a
first-year system, all of that is kind of what points to that. Look, if we had three joints and
two days of work by each of those joints, then we probably wouldn’t be playing. But that’s
just kind of where we’re at. So, we’ve got to go and probably take advantage of these
opportunities.”
(On the importance of players feeling comfortable coming to him like Hainsey did) “Yeah, it
is. We obviously have a little bit more experience with some of those kinds of conversations
than other guys, but I appreciate being able to have that. Trevor called me the other night,
and we talked about it as well on the ride home a little bit. I appreciate that and definitely
more of what you’re looking for in terms of the communication and the ability to be honest
and have a real conversation. Ultimately, those guys have a pulse so much more for what
the locker room is than I do on a daily basis. That’s just the reality. So, it was good to hear
from those guys.”
(On how much of what he wants to see on Saturday has to do with the F.A.S.T.
[fundamentally sound, attacking, situational masters, tough] acronym) “Yeah, that was
exactly what I just said to the group just now. What the evaluation will be is fundamentals,
alignment, assignment, obviously, situational football is going to come up as we know.
We’re playing a physical team, a team that’s been known for physicality, regardless of if
their first guys are in or not. That’s just how they’ve played the game for a long time. So, that
will be a great test for all of our groups that are going to play, to see where we’re at from a
physicality standpoint. It’s live tackling, which we all know it’s hard to get that in a practice
setting at times. So, I think that will be valuable for us as well.”
(On if OL Chuma Edoga is okay) “Yeah, I think so. I didn’t get anything. I didn’t see Ferg [Vice
President of Player Health and Performance Jeff Ferguson] yet either, though. I didn’t walk
off with him. I didn’t hear anything. I saw him go down one time, but he got up. So, I haven’t
heard anything. I haven’t heard anything. I think he would’ve told me if something was
serious, but he didn’t hit me on any true injury stuff.”
(On what he’s seen from Edoga so far through training camp) “Yeah, he’s done a nice job
being able to go in and out. With Patrick [OL Patrick Mekari] coming off the back, being able
to get those valuable reps. Look, it’s still competition, and that’s the beautiful part of it. We
don’t play for a month, so you’ve got now the install is in, we’re done with the installs on
both sides of the ball. So now, for the next three weeks, we can hone those fundamentals,
techniques, concepts and schemes, and also play with rotations. Play with different guys in
different spots a little bit. As obviously you want to get in 10 days at least, as close as you
can, to be able to give them ops [opportunities] to compete, but also tighten it in so we
know maybe who our five, six, are going to be, but I’ve been happy with Chuma. He’s a good
pro.”
(On if anything specific helped the offense perform better in practice today) “I don’t know if
I’d say that, but I did challenge them in the team meeting pretty specifically. Not every play
is going to be perfect, not every play is going to be open, we can’t say that we’re just going
to dial up every play to be open for us to have success. Somebody’s got to make a play.
How many opportunities have we had to make one-on-ones and haven’t made them?
We’re not just going to go and make them on Sundays. So, kind of challenged those guys to
step up a little and have more production in terms of guys just going out and playing the
game, man. It’s like it’s your backyard. Everybody runs the same plays. Everybody in the
NFL runs the same exact plays. It’s just who’s going to do it better? Who’s going to go make
plays? When we call a zone-beater and it’s man, who’s going to go make a play when we get
a one-on-one opportunity? So, I was pleased with their response. I was definitely pleased
with their response yesterday and then started off pretty good today, and as we got younger,
it got a little uglier.”
(On if OC Grant Udinski will be upstairs or on the sideline) “On the sideline.”
(On if he’ll remain on the sideline in the regular season) “Yeah, so, it’ll be Shane [Pass
Game Coordinator Shane Waldron] will go up, [Offensive Pass Game Specialist] John Van
Dam will be up as well and then a couple of the assistant position coaches will be up as
well. Those guys will be up on offense, yeah.”
(On how the game week flow has gone) “Good. So, we kind of treated today from an
operational standpoint like your ‘Fast Friday’ in the NFL. So, we had a little bit of an
elongated walkthrough, good meetings in the morning, elongated walkthrough, practice
wasn’t extremely long, but we got some good work in. Went actually a little over what we
were supposed to do to get some of these younger guys a little bit more extra work. I felt like
it was a good little flow. We’ll kind of see how the rest of this thing goes over the next few
days.”

(On if he likes to play in the preseason) “It’s whatever Coach [Head Coach Liam Coen]
wants. If he asks me to go out there and perform, I’ll go out there and perform. It’s no
problem with me. Just sharpening my skills, nothing wrong with it. So, I feel like it’s the first
time for the offensive group and the defensive group together. I think it’s a good thing that
we go out there and try to showcase it against somebody else.”
(On the progress he’s seen from himself, the secondary and the defense) “We’re getting
comfortable with how Coach Camp [Defensive Coordinator Anthony Campanile] calls
games and predicting where he wants to call different things and what he’s expecting. I
think we’re getting comfortable with that and we’re just going out there trying to make
plays. I feel like we make a play on the ball every single day, and I really enjoy it. I think a lot
of guys feel the same way about the defense. We’ll see what we do in the regular season,
but as far as preseason right now and in camp, I think we’re doing a really good job.”
(On if he thinks this is his best training camp) “No, I just look at it as trying to stack on each
day. That’s it. Just trying to carry that momentum into the regular season. Just going out
here and practicing, making practice extremely hard so the game is fairly easy, and trying to
go out there and make plays.”
(On what he likes about this defense) “It gives me places where I can get vision on the ball
and make plays more than I have in recent years. Just going out there and, of course, I don’t
mind playing man, which I know I can do pretty well. It gets my eyes on the quarterback and
go get the ball, which I feel like I’ve been doing this camp.”
(On if it’s especially beneficial to play in the preseason with a new system) “Yeah because
when those lights come on and you’re playing somebody else, you definitely want to see
how your teammates respond to different things and how they like to play different calls
and their different, I guess, characteristics on the field. I think it’s a really good thing to go
out there and play in the preseason, especially given that we don’t have a lot of reps in
camp against anybody else. I feel like that’s a key thing to do, get out there and see if we
can go do it against somebody else.”
(On what he likes about WR/DB Travis Hunter switching between offense and defense) “His
willingness to go do it. He wants to prove people wrong. I feel like that’s the type of mindset
you have to have to go and be the ultimate competitor out here. Of course, he has all the
skill sets, but I think it’s the mental aspect of it that makes him different.”
(On if Hunter gets frustrated by being doubted) “He’s going to show you. He’s going to try
and do it tenfold and make sure that he puts his best foot forward in doing both things, and
whatever they ask him to do, he wants to do it at full speed. So, like I said, his mental
fortitude for it is unmatched.”
(On if being doubted motivates Hunter) “Yeah. Yeah, I feel like that’s something he kind of
hangs his hat on because there’s a lot of naysayers out there on him. But he comes out
here and performs every single day.”
(On his impressions of the receivers) “They’re competitors, man. They go out there, they
compete, they block hard, they make plays on the ball and they’re challenging us. I feel like
that’s going to be good for us in the long haul. We’re making each other better, but I feel like
they’re having a really good camp.”
(On his relationship with CB Tyson Campbell) “He’s extremely funny. I know a lot of times
people don’t know that. He’s not really that outspoken, but he’s an extremely funny man
and he’s a great dude to be around. He just wants to soak up the game. Any knowledge that
I can give him, he wants to learn more. As you can see, he’s taking it and he’s running with
it.”
(On embracing a leadership role) “Like I said, they brought me here to be myself. I just want
to be myself and whatever those guys ask of me, whatever they need, I want to be the guy
that they can lean on. So, I’m just being myself, honestly. It’s not anything unnatural,
besides just going out there, playing and leading by example.”
(On if he plays on starting in the base defense as the outside corner) “Whatever Coach
wants. I’m a football player, so whatever Coach wants me to do, I’ll go do it.”
(On if he’d like that opportunity) “I don’t mind it. I want to go play. I want to make plays.
That’s it. Wherever I can find myself on the field to go make plays, I want to do it. It doesn’t
matter if they line me up at linebacker, I’ll go out there and give it my all and go make some
plays.”
