(On if being in Coach of the Year talks is on his mind) “No, man. That’s the furthest thing
from your brain at the moment. You’re so focused on the day to day in terms of just trying to
keep getting better as a group. We’re learning so much every day that that’s not even close.”
(On the Jets’ defense and takeaway potential) “Yeah, they’ve definitely had their hands on—
they’re playing sticky match coverage, and you can definitely see their ability to attack the
football when it is in the air, just haven’t gotten one down yet. And [Jets Head Coach] Aaron
Glenn and [Jets Defensive Coordinator] Steve Wilks do a really good job in terms of the
back end, and they want to be aggressive and play sticky match coverage at times. So,
there’s a good blend of it. It’s just a matter of kind of getting their hands on one and taking it
down.”
(On the improvement he is seeing out of the Jets) “Yeah, first of all, the special teams unit
can score in both the return games, in punt and kickoff return, at any time. Has definitely
provided a spark, one of the best special teams units in the National Football League right
now. And they can score from anywhere with those backs and with some of the skill players
they’ve had. So, you can just see that they’ve definitely taken steps in terms of improving as
a team. And it’s a process, and usually if you’ve got good leadership and discipline within
your organization and your team, you’re going to see some sort of improvements, which
they have, and they’re playing fast in all three phases.”
(On how to prepare for a QB who has had limited NFL action) “Yeah, there are definitely
things you take a look at from the past, and with all three of those quarterbacks that you
have to be kind of prepared for. So, all three of them are a little bit different in their own way,
but also from what they’re trying to do offensively, coming from Detroit, they want to be
able to run the football, be physical. So, I think that that’s where it really starts for those
guys and whoever’s playing quarterback, we’ve just got to make sure that we’re prepared
for.”
(On what has begun to click for QB Trevor Lawrence) “I think he definitely has a great
understanding throughout the week of the plan. He’s worked very hard at going through, I
think, some of the reads versus maybe different looks or what we are expecting versus
maybe what could occur. And going through that with Spence [Quarterbacks Coach
Spencer Whipple] and Grant [Offensive Coordinator Grant Udinski] a lot. And just throwing,
he’s been throwing it well. He threw it really well in practice. I know practice doesn’t always
carry over for whatever reason. You try not to overanalyze it that much, but when we were
soaking the ball up pretty good on Thursday, he was spinning it really good, and he has
been, he has been throwing a good, I think, for especially the last four weeks, as you
mentioned. It’s not anything necessarily that’s changed about anything that we’ve done
with him, I think he’s just starting to feel more and more comfortable within the system and
within the guys that he’s playing with.”
(On what confidence and comfort from the QB can do for the rest of the team) “Yeah, it’s
huge. Especially to be able to, like I said the other day, attack every blade of grass
offensively. That’s something that not just the offense feels, but the defense and special
teams as well, because of being able to sustain drives and be able to create some
explosives. It’s definitely something that gets momentum, I think, for the rest of the team.
And anytime your leaders are playing at your best and playing at their best, it’s a good sign
for your team.”
(On if playing back-to-back games at home for the first time in a month is exciting) “Yeah, I
think so. I hope so. I think that from a schedule standpoint, especially for us as players and
coaches and staff, it’s definitely a little helpful when you know that you’re going to head out
west again soon. So, it’s one of those things that you’re able to get into a little bit different
routine, being at home for two weeks, and the guys, their schedule, their travel and all that
is definitely helpful.”
(On whether he has been impressed by players staying focused on one game at a time)
“Yeah, I think that’s our jobs together, it’s any given Sunday in this league as we know. And
so, we’re not in a position to be thinking about anything else but today and having a great
day of preparation and work and practice and get ready for third downs tonight. So that’s
got to be the focus.”
(On Jets RB Breece Hall) “In both the run and the pass, he’s a weapon to score at any time.
He’s been doing that since Iowa State. The creativity when he does get the ball in his hands
and he’s bigger, strong, athletic. He’s got a lot of tools, and I just remember always thinking
he is just a damn good football player. He is just somebody you want to try to get the ball to
in so many different ways. So, a lot of respect for him.”
(On RB Bhayshul Tuten’s playing time against Indianapolis) “It was just kind of the way the
game was going a little bit, and it was kind of weird. We just never got into a great rhythm
running it at times. So, it was just, we go forward a little bit, had a couple of successful
runs, went backward a little bit, and just never got into a great flow. So, we’re going to need
Tuten to continue to ascend, and when he gets the ball out in space, being able to make
some of those guys miss in the secondary so that he can go use that elite trait that he has,
which is role. And so that’s something that we need from him to continue to move forward
as an offense coach.”
(On the deep ball success in the wet conditions) “Yeah, it was awesome to see some hard
work pay off throughout the course of the season, practice, mamba periods. And to see it
pay off on Sunday was definitely beneficial for us. Just getting B.T. [WR Brian Thomas Jr.]
going, but not just him, Tim [WR Tim Patrick] getting a couple down the field shots too, so
that was great to be able to get a little bit more explosive in the pass game for sure. And
some of those balls were dimes.”
(On RB Travis Etienne Jr.’s growth) “Yeah, TJ [Etienne Jr.], he’s been huge for us. When he
gets going for us, he’s definitely a really impactful player in both—we’ve seen in the screen
game as well, but not just that. Being able to hit, I think the good run on the first touchdown
was a really good run. Because you’re in goal line and somebody’s going to be free, and so
he ends up doing a great job of just hitting it and running through contact and falling
forward into the end zone. And then you see on the second one where he is now a little bit
behind a few blockers, but it’s him in space being able to go make somebody miss and
score, as we’ve seen a few times this season. So, the more we can get him going, the
better.”
(On how to keep the intensity for the Jets and not look ahead) “Yeah, we just have no room
for it at all. We’re just not in a place where we can say that. When you’re trying to improve
as a team, and there’s still a lot to continue to correct on tape, it allows us to keep coaching
and to keep trying to improve as a team. Mature football teams don’t let any of that creep
into our minds and into our thought process. And so that’s the message right now.”
(On if OL Cole Van Lanen has done enough to earn a starting spot) “I think so. I think there’s
definitely—he’s played enough really good football for us. We’ve got a great situation right
now where you’ve got depth at multiple positions of people that have had to play for us a
lot. This shows up in multiple positions all throughout the team. You can point to the
defensive side of that for things, receiver position, a lot of different positions that guys have
been fortunate enough to step up, play well, help lead us to get to where we are right now.
And the message in the locker room is, ‘Hey guys, there’s a lot of guys that are coming back
right now, and for us to continue to go where we want to go, we’ve got to use that as an
edge,’ and that depth and experience that we’ve gotten has to be collective and having a
team first mindset about everything we do.”
(On how often he introduces a new play this late in the season) “I’d say it’s extremely
seldom.”
(On whether he will create variations of plays that match players’ specific strengths) “Yeah,
that’s kind of more, I would say, what it’s about at this time of the year. Just trying to maybe
show and run the things that you’ve done well or you’ve maybe done before, and try to
make it look a little bit different than maybe what you’ve put on tape. And that’s the chess
match that continues to evolve in this league. And you see so many great examples of it
when you watch tapes throughout the week of everybody around this league and how
creative people are. And then the defenses are obviously trying to match and do different
things that are really cool to see as well. A lot of smart football coaches in this league. So,
you’ve just got to make sure that you’re finding a balance between new, repetition and just
kind of changing the picture on these guys.”
(On how to prepare for the Jets’return game) “Yeah, I think our special teams units have
risen to many occasions and played at a high level. Heath [Special Teams Coordinator
Heath Farwell] and Luke [Assistant Special Teams Coach Luke Thompson] do a great job
getting those guys a solid plan each week to go and attack, but also be prepared. And I
think if you really look at—[S] Antonio Johnson has continued to be a really good gunner for
us this year. [CB] Jarrian Jones has done some really good things. Obviously, Lane [DB
Rayuan Lane III] is one of the better ones that we’ve been around in terms of the way that
those guys have played. And I just think it’s been a really group effort. [TE] Quintin Morris
has been phenomenal on kickoff at times. [LB] Devin Lloyd’s been on kickoff for weeks,
guys, and it’s hard for people to block him. So, it is just great to see the coverage units with
the mindset and mentality that they’ve had this year. And then Cam [K Cam Little] and
Logan [P Logan Cooke] being on it.”
(On how players have responded to DC Anthony Campanile going ‘down to the studs’ on
defense after the bye week) “Yeah. I don’t know. I’ve always just been told – obviously young
doing this not many years – but I’ve just always heard from college to early on coaching in
the Ivy League, to the CAA, to the SEC, to the NFL, was when you’re struggling, you’ve got to
go back to fundamentals and basics and technique and doing the things that you know are
going to be pillars of your fundamentals, of your foundation of what you believe in, what you
want it to be. But also look at, okay, what is too much for these guys to handle and what
allows them to go and just play fast? Because that’s what it really is about. There are so
many plays, there are so many routes, there are so many coverages and blitzes and stuff
that you can do, and you maybe want to do when your players can do it all. Well, that’s
great, but that sometimes takes time. And for us to get good at anything, we’ve got to get
good at what we want to be for the most part. What do we really want to be? And so, I think
that’s something that they looked at doing, and I think that’s what it comes down to.”
(On the play where Lawrence completed a deep ball to Patrick after spinning out of
pressure) “The zero blitz when he spun out of there? Well, we’d like to have been in a
different protection there and it’s something that we would obviously would’ve not had a
free runner on there, but what I’m proud about that play is that’s two guys making a play.
That’s what that is. We had good runaways versus man, but that’s Trevor—we didn’t win the
cycle of pre-snap because we didn’t get the right protection, but he makes a play and made
an unbelievable throw. And that’s just two guys playing football and making a play and
being at their best when their best is required. So, I think that’s what really makes you
pumped about watching those kind of plays is because that’s guys doing it and that’s, yeah,
within the scheme, but man, they’re helping us. They’re getting us out of a bad situation.
And I think that’s kind of the cool give and take with playing and coaching is when they can
have our backs too and we have each other’s like that, I think that’s pretty cool to see.”
QUARTERBACK TREVOR LAWRENCE
MEDIA AVAILABILITY
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2025
(On if his confidence has grown over the course of the season) “Yeah, for sure. I think it
reflects the way we’ve played, the way I’ve played, especially the last few weeks as an
offense. We’ve played a lot better. And I think that’s showing just everybody getting more
comfortable, more confident. Our group coming together more and more, it takes some
time, especially on offense sometimes to really get that rhythm and continuity between the
whole group. Especially, a lot of guys in and out with injuries and a lot of new guys coming
in and we’ve had some changes and the guys have handled it really well and I really feel
we’re in a spot now where we’re playing a lot more consistent, playing well. I think we all
feel really confident out there, including myself, and it’s definitely grown throughout the
season. Just getting more comfortable with our group and with our system.”
(On if he believes he has mastered the offense) “Yeah, there’s always things that I can
improve on after every game. Different plays where I should have maybe sent the
protection a certain way or maybe miss a read or two or certain throws that you want back.
There’s definitely a couple of them from Sunday that I want back, so you’re always looking
for ways to improve. As far as going into the game with an understanding and knowledge of
just what my job is, what I’m able to get to, different checks, what I’m responsible for, what
plays I need to get out of if it’s certain look, I understand that really well and I feel I have
mastered that by game day. Every game plan’s a little different. But yeah, every game
there’s always some plays where I could have done something a little bit different or you
might miss a check or certain things. So, there’s definitely things to learn from, but I feel
really confident and comfortable in my knowledge of what I’m doing when I get out there on
Sunday and our game plan.”
(On if he can tell that WR Jakobi Meyers was a former quarterback) “Yeah, I think just his
general understanding of the game and the way he processes things. It makes sense that
he played quarterback, just the way he is able to talk about different routes, different zone
coverages, his feel for different zones. He’s a really smart player and he understands
defenses and I think that definitely I’m sure is some credit to that is playing quarterback as
you do have to understand those things. So, we’ve talked a little bit, joked about it. I think I
played against him one time when he was at N.C. State in 2018. That was his last year. So,
we’ve talked about it a little bit.”
(On if it is difficult to not get ahead of himself during the season) “Not really. I think where
we’re at in our season, every week is really critical. You just look at our division, our
division’s a tight race. It’s not we’ve got this huge lead and can afford to mess around and
lose any game. So, I think we are taking it one week at a time and that’s our mindset as a
team and it really is because we have to, and every game is really critical. So, we’re taking it
one game at a time and nothing’s bigger than this game against New York Sunday.”
(On if he is surprised with the Jets defense not yet recording an interception) “Yeah, like you
said, the way they fly around and they do some really good things on defense and they
create some issues and you watch the tape and they’ve had a lot of close ones. Obviously,
they haven’t been interceptions, but they’ve had a lot that have been really close and
they’re around the ball a lot. So, it is surprising. We want to keep that going this week
though and make it go another week. But yeah, they do some really good things on defense.
We’ve got to have a good plan for them.”
(On if he had his best week of the practice last week) “I don’t know. I think I was happy with
the way I played and performed on Sunday. I thought I did my job and gave guys
opportunities down the field and guys made some great plays. There’s a lot of guys out
there that did an awesome job. So as far as my whole career, I don’t really know, best game
or anything that. We had a great week of practice though, our team did, just the focus. This
time of year, coach has done a good job of trying to take care of our bodies in certain parts
of the practice so we can take a little bit of the physical toll off it. But mentally just the
communication and the way the guys are moving around and talking and just how sharp
our practices have been, I think has reflected how we’ve played in the games.”
(On how much he accomplishes in a practice that consists of a lot of mental work) “It’s a
lot. You get a lot done. Our first and second down game plan, I guess it’s hard to describe,
you guys I’m sure have maybe seen some game plans. It’s pretty in depth and there’s a lot
of stuff to cover and to get in. So, it’s a ton of reps of just getting every look that you can and
trying to make sure everybody’s on the same page, running through everything that’s in the
plan. And then there’s a lot of time, obviously after practice, to go back through it and
watch the tape and watch the different looks and look at the corrections and see what we
need to do a little bit different. So, there’s a ton to get done on a Wednesday, even if you’re
not going full speed every rep. There’s a lot that you have to do and you have to be able to
do that as a team because later in the season you just can’t practice full speed every single
rep and run 80 plays out there every day. Its just guys’ bodies won’t hold up. So, coach
[Head Coach Liam Coen] has done a great job of managing the schedule. We just do what
the schedule is, but he is taking care of us, he has done a great job and I think we’ve
responded the right way and been mature about it.”
(On the explosive plays to WR Brian Thomas Jr.) “Yeah, he played awesome, just making
plays down the field. He had some unbelievable catches and for me, just trying to give him
opportunities because you see what he can do when he gets the opportunity. So just trying
to keep that going. And obviously for me, I’ve always known that that’s something that he’s
great at and we’ve seen it over the past, what year and a half, getting close to two years
now, the plays that he can make. So I think it’s just going to continue to help this offense,
having that threat alongside obviously what Jakobi’s [WR Jakobi Meyers] able to do and Tim
[WR Tim Patrick] and Brenton [TE Breton Strange] and Parker [WR Parker Washington] and
Travis [RB Travis Etienne Jr.] and all the backs. There’s just so many weapons that we have
and the more that we can all click, which I think we are, the more dangerous we are.”
(On Colts QB Phillip Rivers) “Yeah, that’s pretty impressive (laugh). I don’t really know what
else to say about it. I’m not in that situation, so it’s hard for me to even imagine. But he’s a
great player, so we’ll see this little break, how he looks after that. But he’s a heck of a player
and it was fun watching him the whole time growing up. He’s a stud.”
(On how many guys on the offense can step up) “Yeah, it’s huge. You look at obviously
Parker missing last week and I think everyone would’ve thought that that was a really big
deal, just the season he was having and how much of an impact he had on our offense. And
then to see Tim step up and make the plays he made. But that goes for really offensive line,
different backs had to step up at different times, receivers, tight ends, guys on defense.
There’s been so many spots in our team that have guys haven’t played that you would think,
man, this is going to really hurt our team and then we go out and still play well. And it’s not
to say that we don’t miss having those guys, but it’s just goes to show guys being ready the
depth that we have really across our whole team. Guys preparing every week they are the
starter because that doesn’t just happen by cramming the week you are going to play. You
have to be prepared well in advance for that. You can’t just flip a switch and say, alright,
now I have to play, I have to figure it all out in two days. It’s really a lot of time and that’s a
process that guys have to go through to be ready.”
(On when it started to feel different under Head Coach Liam Coen) “I think from the first
day we were all in here, to be honest, just the energy that Liam’s brought and the whole
staff. I think everyone, just to see the alignment and the way everything’s been handled. I’ve
been through a few staff changes and there’s always a lot of positivity at the beginning, but
to see how the staff has handled the adversity of the season. I think that’s always the
biggest test is everything’s great in the spring and then wait until you get to the season and
you lose a few games and then you see how people respond. I’ve been really impressed
with, obviously Liam, how he’s responded to everything. But the whole staff and the
relationship between players and coaches has been very good, very professional. They’ve
coached us hard and it’s been awesome to be around.”
