(On the opportunity to play four divisional games in the last six games) “That is huge. We
did talk about it a little bit this morning, obviously, for this game and how important games
in November and December are specifically, but even more so when it comes to divisional
games that the teams are used to playing each other, know each other a little bit. There’s
obviously some familiarity with both of these teams and staffs. So yeah, it’s a huge
opportunity for us. This is why you play, you get into these parts of the season, everybody’s
nicked up, everybody’s a little bumped and bruised, but it comes down to taking advantage
of these opportunities and making the most of them and having that heightened sense of
urgency as we get into later November, December games specifically, as we get into these
divisional ball games, how important these are. Yeah, we talked about it this morning.”
(On S Eric Murray’s injury progression and the safety room) “We’ll see what he [Murray]
looks like throughout the week. Great to just get him back out on the grass, hopefully, the
communication, the ability to continue to calm things down with his presence. But I really
believe that [S] Antonio Johnson has stepped up in a major way. I thought the last few
weeks specifically, Dewey [S Andrew Wingard] has also played some good football for us,
and [DB] Rayuan Lane [III] has stepped up in a big way. He played the most snaps I think
this past week that he’s kind of played throughout the season and when he’s out there, he
just plays his tail off as he does on special teams. So, getting Eric back will definitely help.
We’ll see what it looks like for his availability this week but been very confident. Antonio
Johnson is playing with as much confidence as I’ve ever seen him have and his impact in
the game for us in a positive way.”
(On what has sparked the increased success of the pass rush) “I don’t really know. I mean,
it’s not anything crazy different scheme or anything like that. I just think that when the front
and the coverage match well in terms of whether it’s zone or man, not allowing for the ball
to come out maybe as quickly as it was able to come out and then getting those guys up
front going and having them being in matchups that are favorable, but also winning one-on-
ones, defeating blocks, straining through the echo of the whistle, favorable matchups, all
that stuff I think goes into it. But I do think our coverage in the back end has improved over
the last two weeks, let’s call it, in terms of playing a little bit stickier, having a little bit more
of a feel on the underneath zone specifically, to not get as much depth in some of our zone
coverage. Having a little bit more of a feel for, alright, people are trying to work those quick
to short, intermediate throws as a linebacker or a nickel or a safety down at the second
level, not giving up too much ground and depth. I think that those things combined have
helped the pass rush be able to get home more.”
(On the challenges presented by Titans DT Jeffery Simmons) “A ton. Man, I’m not saying he
is Aaron Donald, but there are some similarities there in terms of his ability to create in
both the run and the pass, how quickly some of his wins come, the effort. Showed a clip
this morning against Denver where they had double-chip protection, play-action pass, the
pocket looked extremely clean for quite some time, and then the ball just kind of got held
onto, the routes maybe weren’t there yet, and he’s going to finish and strain through the
echo of the whistle. Great challenge for us as a group. But he’s definitely disruptive, and
you can see that he’s believing in terms of—they have belief as a team. There’s no quit in
that team at all right now. They’re actually playing better and better.”
(On the growth of Titans QB Cam Ward) “Makes the throw on third and XL to put them in
scoring position against Houston to go tie the game, was an incredible throw last week
against Seattle off schedule, moving around more in the pocket, moving outside of the
pocket, extending, allowing people to kind of win a little bit more. He’s definitely found, I
think, a comfort level in some ways of moving around more, moving within the pocket,
extending plays, but also then playing in rhythm when he is in the pocket. You definitely see
growth and improvement there as I think we’ve all maybe thought was going to come and
happen for him. So yeah, you can tell he just continues to improve and I think using his legs
and extending plays has helped him.”
(On the first time the Titans-Jaguars rivalry was mentioned to him when he took this job) “I
would say it was fairly early on. Tony [Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony
Boselli], I think mentioned it to me a few times with maybe some of the times he’s gone up
there and played or whatever it is, stories of vice versa, those guys coming down here. And
being in Lexington, not far from Nashville, you definitely heard it a little bit being out there in
terms of yeah, there’s a care factor here. There’s a real I guess you call it—there’s a rivalry,
there’s an in-division game, opponent that both teams have probably won games they
shouldn’t, and lost games they shouldn’t. Whatever it is, it’s one of those games that we
understand that anything can happen. Any given Sunday anything can happen, but
especially in division games where there’s maybe just that little extra want to on both sides.
So, we know what this challenge is. Records don’t mean anything in the NFL right now,
mean nothing.”
(On the trust required from QB Trevor Lawrence towards his receivers on the touchdown
throws against the Cardinals) “The one in zero blitz to Jakobi [WR Jakobi Meyers], we
actually had a very similar rep on Thursday in the walkthrough. We were doing a situational
end of game walkthrough type deal, and we were in empty and our defense zero blitzed us
and he retreated away and threw it actually to Parker [WR Parker Washington]. It was a
similar type route but he was playing it live and true. And then he gets in the game in, not
end-of-game desperation, but a critical third down, got-to-have-it play, it looked as if they
were going to rush four, so he emptied the back out and then they zeroed him. So, we’re in a
five-man protection with two chippers that are releasing. We’re hot. And he just made a
play and made a great throw, trusted Jakobi to stick his foot in the ground and get his head
around in zero. And then the one to Parker in the red zone as well, where he had to step up
in the pocket, made a great pec-to-pec movement because the guy was swiping over the
top, made a great pec-to-pec movement in rhythm, gave Parker an opportunity throw. So,
both of those are just great examples of, ‘Hey man, you just go play and not try to do too
much before the snap and just go play and let your talents kind of take over.’ And those are
two great examples that we can continue to build on.”
(On WR Parker Washington’s ability to make plays in the receiving and return game) “Yeah,
we’ve all been seeing it for a while since training camp, really. He’s been one of our top
performing receivers since training camp. He’s worked his tail off to learn the system since
we got here. He’s one of the first guys in the building every day, takes super care of his body,
very intentional about the way that he practices and goes about his business, and then on
Sundays, has made plays for us in a lot of ways. He’s definitely trusted. He’s somebody we
count on to continue to make plays and obviously the first play of overtime was a great
example of that where he’s used in the slot a lot and we put him out at 1 on a one-on-one
opportunity and he goes up and makes a play. So, lot of respect for Parker and he’ll
continue to help us win games.”
(On the benefits of 12 personnel to the offense) “Yeah, I like 12 personally. I think it can help
be balanced in the run and the pass. It helps you there and then some games specifically
dictate a little bit, okay, we want to be a little bit more 11 this week versus 12 based on
maybe what you’re getting structurally. Last week was a week that we wanted to be a little
bit heavier just based on Arizona’s defensive structure and some of the things that come up
in nickel defense that we didn’t really want to deal with too much. And those guys
obviously, Strange [TE Brenton Strange] coming back, but Quintin [TE Quintin Morris] and
Johnny [TE Johnny Mundt] and [TE] Hunter Long, how much they’ve continued to ascend
and help us win games this year… I like 12 and hopefully we can continue to use it.”
(On Titans WR Chimere Dike’s punt return abilities) “Liked him a lot coming out, obviously
not far down the road here in Florida. Watched him a ton throughout the evaluation
process, was somebody we had a lot of respect for in that process. And man, he has made
game-changing plays or game-altering plays to give them boosts and give them
opportunities to stay in games. That was the guy that we talked about this morning on the
game wreckers for special teams. So not just on teams, but on offense where you see him
catch shallow crosses and he can go and take it, I think they’re getting more and more
comfortable using him on offense and confidence and on the special teams unit. I know
[Titans Special Teams Coordinator] John Fassel very well and I know he’ll try to scheme him
to get him opportunities to make plays again this Sunday.”
(On the challenge of playing in cold and rainy conditions) “It’s November football, man. It’s
November football in the NFL. You’ve got to deal with the elements and going and playing in
a little colder weather. I mean, it’s football. And so, I grew up in that, and this is different for
me, seeing palm trees out here is a little new in November and heading into December and
you’re in Thanksgiving week and it’s like, wait, where’s the tree color change and all that?
But it’ll be a great op. I mean, this is why you play, why you prepare, to have games like this,
it’s kind of the essence of football.”
(On what LB Foye Oluokun has meant to the team) “I’ve gotten closer and closer with Foye,
I think, over the year. The amount of respect I have for not just the football player, but the
person, the leader, the man. He’s definitely been a consistent rock for us in a lot of ways.
And the guy in the locker room, he’s just the same all the time. It doesn’t change. He’s not a
chameleon by any means, he doesn’t change. And the way that he talks to me, the way he
talks to the team, the way that he plays, he’s been doing it at a high level for a long time now
and very pleased with his consistency, his leadership. And he gets people to the ground.
He’s a darn good tackler.”
(On expectations for WR Brian Thomas Jr.’s return) “Yeah, we’ll have to see what he looks
like obviously this week and see how much he can do and help us get out in the grass,
obviously. We definitely need his presence and to get somebody out there that can
continue to stretch the field and make big plays for us. So, we’ll take it day-by-day.”
(On having the platform for My Cause My Cleats as an NFL head coach) “Yeah, it’s
interesting because you’ve gone through it as an assistant and you’re not in the spotlight
about what your cause is. And so now obviously going into this position, it’s really cool. I
think our organization’s done a good job of kind of highlighting this and letting our players
have a platform to not only show as a team, but individually some of the meaning behind
their causes. They’ve been able to do some tapes, things that have gone out and take a
little bit of a deeper dive into some of these players and what their causes are, maybe some
of their why’s behind why they play and why they do this. And obviously for us as coaches,
it’s a great opportunity for us to be able to help support maybe things that have affected our
lives in the past.”
(On his suicide prevention cleats) “Yeah, my mom passed. Yeah, she committed suicide
when I was 21 years old. So, obviously she was sick, had Lyme disease for a few years there
and I was a red shirt sophomore in college when that occurred. So that’s definitely in my
family in terms of she’s in our thoughts and prayers, so she’ll be with us on Sunday.”

(On his cleats for My Cause, My Cleats) “I love them. They’re great. It’d be bad if I didn’t say
that my brother and sister-in-law helped design them, but I really do love them. Obviously,
our colors, I love the gold and everything. And then, they’ve got the logo here for Here
Tomorrow and they did a great job. So, excited for it.”
(On if it was the first time his brother has designed his cleats) “Yeah, first time he’s done it.
I’ve had some kids from elementary school, Long Branch a few years ago. I’m trying to think
of all the years now, the different art that has been done. Soles by Sir does them a lot of
times. He’s actually the one that painted them. My brother and sister-in-law just did the
design because you’ve got to use certain paint and all that, so they’ll stay on when you play.
So yeah, now I’m excited though.”
(On if he will wear the cleats) “Yeah, I’m going to wear them. I usually wear them in the
game. Especially, these are our colors. They’ll go pretty good. I’ve worn some ones that
didn’t match at all and I still wore them was like a rainbow. I just wear them one day in
practice and so everybody’s different, but I can wear some newer ones.”
(On if there was ‘drama’ with his brother and sister-in-law designing the cleats after five
years) “No, they haven’t given me too much. Yeah, stirring the pot right before Thanksgiving.
He knows exactly what’s going on, seeing those memes about Thanksgiving drama. He’s
starting trying to start some, but no, they haven’t given me too much flack for that. But
we’ve done a lot of cool stuff together, so this is just another one to add to the list and
obviously a great cause. Here Tomorrow is pretty amazing what they’re doing here in
Jacksonville.”
(On why he chose Here Tomorrow) “My brother has known the founder Joe Kenney for a
long time and started doing some artwork with them. And then through that I went and
visited their building here in, I believe it’s in Neptune Beach. And I think it’s incredible what
they’re doing. Obviously, it’s a suicide prevention organization, it’s free of cost to people
that need help. They can go and get help and it’s free. They don’t have to worry about how
much it’s going to cost and all those things. And it’s just incredible what they’re doing. I
think their process of how they’re trying to help people with mental health issues is pretty
cool. Definitely inspiring. I think all of us have been affected by someone in their life,
whether it’s family, friends, whoever. Suicide is a big issue in our world and our country and
I think it’s a great time to shine some light on all the good they’re doing.”
(On his favorite Thanksgiving food) “Favorite Thanksgiving food, sweet potato casserole
would be up there for me. Unpopular one, I guess from reading the room (laugh).”
(On playing on the road for the fourth time in five weeks) “You start to get used to it. It’s just
kind of whatever. Whatever hey put in front of us is our schedule, you just go play it. So, you
just get used to it and I think it’s been good for us to have to handle that as far as just being
on the road and playing at home is, at the end of the day it’s just football, but playing at
home is definitely easier than playing on the road. So, I think for our team it’s been good.
And yeah, I don’t have much else on that. It’ll be nice to, obviously in the back half of our
season, be at home a little bit more, but this is a big one obviously in Tennessee, big
division rival opponent. And a game we need to play well and need to go get a win.”
(On if he does anything different for a game where it will be wet conditions) “Not really. Just
try to keep the ball dry as much as we can. George [Head Equipment Manager George
Pellicer], if he’s hearing this, all of our EQ guys do an awesome job of just rotating the balls
in and out and keeping them dry and that’s all you can do. I usually have one of those hand
warmers, but the inside, instead of being just fuzzy and warm, it’s got this like drying
material that dries your hands off. So, I use one of those, but besides that, that’s about it.”
(On if wet conditions have affected him historically) “I think a little bit of course as a
thrower, you’d prefer the ball to be dry, but you get used to it. It’s almost like you’d rather the
ball be really wet than just right when it gets wet is when it’s the slickest, when it’s kind of
getting soaked and the whole ball’s wet, it actually gets a little bit better as long as it’s not
too heavy. But like I said, as much as they can get different balls in there, it usually doesn’t
become too much of an issue. Obviously, you get some games that are crazy, but we’ll see
what happens Sunday.”
(On his experience with interim Titans Head Coach Mike McCoy) “He was great to me. He
was a great voice for me and a person in the room just to lean on. I’ve had some great
memories with him, and we keep in touch. We’ve kind of texted throughout the season, all
offseason and he’s just always been really encouraging to me and he’s still kept up and
obviously, been a little bit busier since he’s got the interim as he’s the head coach over
there. So haven’t talked quite as much, but it’ll be great to see him on Sunday. And that’s a
guy that I’ll have a relationship with forever. We were really tight, had a good relationship
and it’ll be awesome to see him.”
(On playing four divisional games in the last six) “Yeah, you look at our season and a bunch
of crazy things happen throughout the season. Some tough losses, some great wins. And
you look at where we’re at and you’re right where you want to be. Obviously, a lot of things
could go different ways, but we’re right where we want to be. We control our own destiny. A
lot of division games coming up. And that’s all you can ask for is just to be able to dictate
what you’re able to do as a team and it’s not like you’re hoping for someone else to lose or
win. We can control our own destiny and we just have to take care of business and take it
one week at a time, like we’ve been doing. So that feels good to be in that position and we
know how big these games are and you see our division shaping up and every game is so
crucial and you’ve really just got to stay focused on who our opponent is and taking it one
week at a time because you never know what’s going to happen.”
(On how his relationship has grown with WR Parker Washington) “It’s grown a lot. I think
he’s always been a guy that I’ve trusted, but I think just having that time together and those
real game reps and full-speed reps just accumulated over the past year or whatever it’s
been. Just more and more. I think we’re getting more and more comfortable. I’m getting
comfortable with how he runs all the different routes and you see different looks every
game and you learn from them. And I think you’re seeing that chemistry just come along
every week. So, we’ve got to keep building on that. He’s been playing awesome. I can’t
speak highly enough of him and just how he’s attacked this year and not just how he plays
on Sunday, the way he prepares and the way he practices. He’s earned all these
opportunities and just proud of how he’s been playing and excited just to keep building on
that chemistry because you can tell it’s definitely coming along more and more.”
(On his relationship with WR Jakobi Meyers) “Yeah, he’s been awesome. Like I said this the
last few weeks, it’s come along quicker than I would’ve thought. Sometimes that takes time
with different receivers to try to get that chemistry and the timing and all that stuff and it’s
been pretty seamless with him. I think obviously, his experience is really important. He’s
played a lot of football; he has kind of done it all as far as the different offenses, systems.
He’s played a lot of different positions, so him understanding different schemes and
different concepts and what he is being asked to do also helps because he can get up to
speed really fast and he communicates really well. So, we talk a lot during practice to try to
get more and more familiar just because you don’t have the offseason reps and all that
stuff banked, but it’s been awesome. I think you’ve seen that’s been building every week as
well. There’s been some throws and catches where you can see where we’re right on time.
I’m letting it go before he is breaking just because we’ve already built up a lot of trust, so
excited to keep building that too.”
(On having a Head Coach will the mentality to move past mistakes) “It’s great. We talk a lot.
Me and Liam, we have a good relationship and we just are constantly communicating,
throughout the week, throughout the game. And so, I think that as a quarterback is a good
feeling when you know your coach trusts you. And regardless of the circumstances,
obviously had a lot of turnovers on Sunday and he’s still calling—not just calling passes, of
course you’ve got to throw the ball to win, but on first-and-10 and times where we could
have ran the ball, he still trusted me with the ball to go make plays and was happy that we
were able to get it done. For obviously for him, for our team. But offensively we were able to
go on a few drives at the end of the game to get some points and get us in it. So, I think
that’s a big part of this whole team deal is the trust and it’s with coach to us and vice versa.
And I think we have that and it’s continuing to grow every week, so it’s been fun.”
(On if the passing game is improving) “For sure. I think we’re moving it really well. There’s
definitely stuff to clean up as there always is, but overall I think we’ve been more
consistent. Like you said, we’ve had some turnovers for sure that we need to clean up and
take care of the ball, but if you take away some of those possessions, most of those
possessions were moving the ball and a couple of those have been, one of those was in the
red zone last week, so that takes points off the board. And then obviously the backed-up
fumble, we gave them 14 points. And if you look at it like that, it’s crazy to think of what we
could do on offense if turn those into points and we we’re scoring more consistently,
keeping the ball. Our time of possession’s already been good so it’s just all positives.
Obviously, we have to clean it up but really excited for it.”
