Decorated midfielder to play final regular season match at DRV PNK Stadium on Saturday;
Career of nearly 20 years and over 400 appearances to come to an end following 2021 season
MIAMI (October 29, 2021) – Inter Miami CF midfielder Federico Higuaín announced today that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2021 MLS season, bringing an end to a stellar career of nearly 20 years, over 400 appearances and over 170 combined goals and assists.
Higuaín will captain Inter Miami in his final regular season home match at DRV PNK Stadium this Saturday, Oct. 30 when the team takes on New York City FC at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Higuaín joined Inter Miami on Oct. 10, 2020 when he was acquired via trade from D.C. United. Since then, he has made 28 appearances for the Club, including six starts, and registered three goals and four assists in 768 minutes of play. He also made history with the Club when he and his younger brother Gonzalo, just the 18th pair of brothers to play together in MLS, became the first pair of brothers to score in the same MLS match, doing so on April 24, 2021 in a victory over the Philadelphia Union. The brothers replicated the feat on Oct. 23, 2021 when they each scored in a victory over FC Cincinnati, marking just the third occurrence of the accomplishment in MLS history.
Higuaín began his professional career in 2003, graduating from the Club Atlético River Plate academy to play for the senior team in the Argentine topflight. The midfielder remained with River Plate from 2003 to 2007, but also featured for several different clubs in his native Argentina, including Club Atlético Colón for two seasons (2010-2012), Godoy Cruz for one season (2009-2010), Club Atlético Independiente for one season (2008-2009) and Nueva Chicago on loan from River Plate for two seasons (2005-2007).
He also made stops in Mexico and Turkey, playing for Turkish giants Beşiktaş JK for one season (2007-2008) and Mexican powerhouse Club América for half a season in 2008. With Beşiktaş, he recorded two goals and two assists in 16 appearances. With Club América, he registered two goals and one assist in 22 appearances.
The Argentine then became one of MLS’s best midfielders as he featured for the Columbus Crew for eight seasons, joining the team in July 2012. Higuaín was named the MLS Newcomer of the Year in 2012, led the Crew to the MLS Cup Final in 2015, and became only the 19th player in MLS history to register at least 50 goals and 50 assists in MLS. Overall, Higuaín registered 55 goals and 63 assists in 193 regular season appearances with Columbus, in addition to four goals and five assists in 14 playoff matches. The midfielder is the all-time assists leader for the Crew.
After his time in Columbus, the attacking midfielder joined D.C. United ahead of the 2020 season as a player and Player Development Coach, where he made 10 appearances, scoring two goals.

Higuaín será el capitán de Inter Miami en su último encuentro de la temporada regular en casa en el DRV PNK Stadium el sábado 30 de octubre, cuando el equipo reciba la visita del New York City FC a la 1:30 p.m. ET.
Higuaín se unió a Inter Miami el 10 de octubre de 2021 cuando fue adquirido por medio de un canje con el D.C. United. Desde entonces, ha realizado 28 apariciones con el Club, incluyendo seis de ellas como parte del once inicial, anotado tres goles y repartido cuatro asistencias en 768 minutos de juego. Además, hizo historia con el Club cuando él y su hermano menor Gonzalo, tan solo la 18a pareja de hermanos en jugar juntos en la MLS, se convirtieron en los primeros hermanos en anotar en el mismo encuentro de la MLS, haciéndolo el 24 de abril de 2021 en una victoria sobre el Philadelphia Union. El argentino posteriormente se convirtió en uno de los mejores mediocampistas de la MLS militando en el Columbus Crew a lo largo de ocho temporadas, uniéndose al equipo en julio de 2012. Higuaín fue nombrado como la Contratación del Año de la MLS en 2012, lideró al Crew a la final de la MLS Cup en 2015 y se convirtió en tan solo el jugador número 19 en la historia en registrar al menos 50 goles y 50 asistencias en la MLS.
