Gator Soccer Plays Host to Mississippi Sunday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Two teams in second in current Southeastern Conference Division standings – Florida and Mississippi – meet Sunday at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium. The match is televised on the SEC Network at 3 p.m. ET.

Florida’s Last Match:
The Gators won 2-1 at Mississippi State on Sunday, Sept. 26. All the scoring came in the opening half, as a pair of goals is the most for the Gators in 2021 first-half action. The opening goal in the 30th minute started when Cameron Hall sent the ball forward to Kouri Peace at the top of the Bulldogs’ defensive third. Her header flicked to just above the top of the box was run down by Kit Loferski for 15-yard right-footed strike to the far post. That goal extended Loferski’s team-leading total to four for 2021, which also set her collegiate high for season goals.

A set piece led to the Gators’ second goal in the 35th minute. Senior Georgia Eaton-Collins headed in Delaney Tauzel’s corner kick for her first goal of 2021. The Bulldogs cut the lead to one in the 38th minute with Hailey Farrington-Bentil’s 15-yard strike to the far post. That goal was the final by either team for the match.

Sunday’s win was the second consecutive for the Gators. UF won 1-0 OT on Thursday in home action versus Kentucky. Sophomore transfer Juliane Leskauskas’ first Gator goal was golden, scoring in the 92nd minute.

Last Time Florida-Mississippi Played:
When the two teams last met on Oct. 10, 2019 in Oxford, Miss., the Rebels upset then No. 19 Florida 3-2. UF’s Madison Alexander opened the scoring with a 16-yard shot in the 25th minute. The Rebels tied the match in the 39th minute when Channing Foster put in a deflection.

Each team scored a goal in the opening three minutes of the second half. UM’s Lonnie Mulligan intercepted a Gator clearance attempt, then brought the ball into the box to score on a 12-yard shot just 35 seconds into the second half. UF’s Cassidy Lindley tied the match again at 47:20, scoring on a sharply angled shot off a deflection. A set play produced the deciding goal as Molly Martin headed in the free kick from Haleigh Stackpole in the 77th minute.

Mississippi and Florida have played one common opponent this season, as both teams lost in home meetings versus No. 20 UCF. The Rebels have played two overtimes with both matches ending in 1-1 double overtime ties (at Memphis; versus Samford).

UM’s last two SEC matches were versus ranked opponents. The Rebels handed then No. 5 LSU its first loss of the season with 2-0 win in Oxford. Last Sunday at then No. 16 Arkansas, UM lost 4-1 to the defending co-SEC champions.
