Fort Lauderdale works on solid waste

The Fort Lauderdale Public Works Program Manager Melissa Doyle and Commissioner Steven Glassman provided an update for the Solid Waste Working Group. The Solid Waste Working Group was created in 2019 to create a regional solution to manage all solid waste generated in Broward County. The update highlighted the Waste Generation Study which calculates the amount of waste created residentially and commercially by weight, and the Composition Study which identifies the types of waste being generated. Next steps may include special assessments, a regional solid waste master plan, and the finalization of an Interlocal Agreement that will be sent to participating cities for review and feedback.

Commissioner Steve Glassman said, “Since my appointment to this board from our City Commission, I have attended 37 meetings and we are making great progress on this countywide effort. Waste disposal and recycling are huge issue facing our County and the new Authority we will create will have major responsibilities,” he said.

The City Commission, acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board of Commissioners, approved a resolution to accept the instruments of conveyance for fifteen properties located in the Northwest-Progresso-Flagler-Heights Community Redevelopment Area from the City of Fort Lauderdale for affordable housing, contract with companies for appraisal, title, survey, demolition, maintenance, and related services, authorize the issuance of Request for Proposals for the development of the properties, and authorize the Executive Director to execute all related instruments and delegate authority to the Executive Director to take certain actions. The City Charter allows the City to convey real property owned by the City to another public agency for a public purpose. The transfer from the City will occur by a quitclaim deed, and all fees, costs, and expenses shall be paid by the CRA.
