University of Florida freshman Leanne Wong added another medal in her first World Gymnastics Championships appearance – winning bronze in the floor exercise final Sunday in Kitakyushu, Japan.
Wong won silver Thursday in the all-around. She is the 16th U.S. gymnast to claim two or more medals in a single World Championships. A U.S. gymnast brought home multiple World Championship medals now 26 times. Kim Zmeskal was the first in 1991, winning all-around gold and bronze on floor exercise.
This is the eighth consecutive World Championships a U.S. competitor won a floor medal. A U.S. gymnast has claimed 21 medals in World Championship’s floor exercise competition. Wong is the 17th from the U.S. to step onto the podium to receive a World Championships’ floor medal.
Wong also competed in the balance beam final Sunday, just finishing outside of the medals in fourth (13.333).
The Gators’ 2022 roster contains two freshmen with World Championships’ all-around and floor medals. In addition to Wong, Morgan Hurd won the all-around (2017) and silver on floor (2018) in Worlds competition. Wong enrolled at UF this fall and Hurd joins the Gators in January 2022.
Today’s finals signaled the end of the 2021 World Championships.
