University of Florida freshman Leanne Wong won silver in World Gymnastics Championships all-around final Thursday in Kitakyushu, Japan.
Following all-around champion Angelina Melnikova of Russia (56.632) was the U.S. duo of Wong (56.340) and Kayla DiCello (54.566).
A U.S. gymnast has finished among the top three all-arounders in each of the last 14 World Championships. This is the fifth time in that span the U.S. had two World Championships’ all-around medalists.
Of the 16 different U.S. gymnasts to claim a World Championships’ all-around medal, four will (Morgan Hurd, Wong) or have (Bridget Sloan, Kyla Ross) competed as a NCAA gymnast. Three of those four have Gator ties, as Sloan twice won the NCAA all-around. Wong enrolled at UF this fall and Hurd joins the Gators in January 2022.

Wong entered Thursday’s all-around final seeded No. 2 after her performance earlier this week in qualification. In Thursday’s all-around, Wong led all competitors on balance beam (13.90) and floor exercise (14.033). She will compete Sunday for more World Championships medals in those event finals.
