The Florida Legislature passed a new condo safety reform package during the special legislative session. The legislature’s regular session ended earlier this year without action following the collapse of Champlain Towers South in June 2021. In response, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released the following statement:
“I applaud the members of the Florida legislature for taking action to protect the families of Florida through these condo safety reforms. Almost a year after the senseless tragedy in Surfside, these measures will help to protect hundreds of thousands of Floridians living in condo buildings just like the Champlain Towers South.
“Since the Surfside tragedy, Miami-Dade is doing all that we can to protect the lives and homes of our residents. We launched an online building portal which allows the public to obtain information about the recertification status of local buildings, and we’re working with our cities and municipalities to ensure current recertification data for all buildings in Miami-Dade is readily available. I am grateful for the leadership of County Commissioner Rene Garcia in helping to champion these reforms.
