Coral Springs, FL – Cue the confetti and cancel the calculator—Florida has officially eliminated the dreaded Business Rent Tax (BRT) starting October 1, 2025. This is a historic victory for businesses across the state and a momentous milestone for the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce, which has been championing this cause for more than a decade.
For years, Florida held the not-so-coveted title of being the only state in the nation that taxed commercial leases. From retail shops and office suites to warehouses and co-working spaces, businesses had to shell out extra dollars just for the privilege of paying rent. No more.
“This is a day we’ve been working toward for ten years,” said Charinus Johnson Davis, President/CEO of the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber. “Our members have carried this financial burden long enough—and thanks to our persistence, advocacy, and the support of the Florida Chamber and pro-business legislators, that burden is gone.”
What’s Changing:
Effective October 1, 2025: The Business Rent Tax is completely repealed.
What it means: Lease payments for commercial property—retail, office, industrial—will no longer be subject to Florida’s sales tax.
Next steps:
– Landlords must stop collecting the tax on applicable lease payments after Oct 1.
– Tenants should review lease invoices and make sure the tax is removed moving forward.
