FIU WTN News: Umarova Named C-USA Athlete of the Week

DALLAS (Feb. 24, 2021) –
Kamila Umarova was named the Conference USA Athlete of the Week after leading the FIU women’s tennis team to two wins, the league office announced on Wednesday.

The honor is the first of Umarova’s career and the first for the FIU women’s tennis program since Basak Akbas earned the honor on March 6, 2019.

Umarova won four matches last week, with two coming in singles action and two in doubles play with ranked partner Akbas. The Panthers downed North Florida 5-2 at home, before blanking Stetson 7-0 on the road.

“We’re happy to have Kamila back after almost a year away,” Katarina Petrovic said. “She has been working hard at home this whole time and it shows on the court.”

Despite recently returning to the United States and rejoining FIU’s lineup, Umarova won Saturday’s singles match after fighting off back-to-back tiebreaker sets against her UNF foe. Both of Umarova’s singles wins last week clinched FIU victories.

In doubles play, Umarova and Akbas won both contests as the 59th-ranked duo improved to 2-0 on the season.
