FB | Owls Prepare for Conference Home Opener

9/23/2025 | Football
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Following a bye week, the Florida Atlantic football team returned to the practice field on Tuesday mindful of Hagerty Family Head Football Coach Zach Kittley‘s message, which is the opportunity to win the American Conference is still ahead. The Owls are 0-0 going into this week’s league play.
FAU is slated to play host to Memphis, who enter this week’s contest 4-0 and are coming off a victory over last weekend’s SEC opponent. The Owls are 1-2 and coming off a bye. The two teams have met twice previously, both in bowl contests and each coming away with a victory. The first meeting was in the 2007 New Orleans Bowl. At that time, FAU was the youngest startup program to earn a bowl berth and became the youngest to earn a victory. Memphis defeated FAU in the 2020 Montgomery Bowl Game.
The Owls are led by redshirt junior quarterback Caden Veltkamp, who also leads the nation in completions per game as well as redshirt junior wide receiver Easton Messer, who is second nationally in receptions per game. Defensively, CJ Doggette Jr. is coming off a game with two tackles for a loss, including a sack, and the special teams unit have lived up to its ‘special’ name with back-to-back games with a blocked punt for a score.Owl fans are asked to wear red this week and help Florida Atlantic “Defend Paradise.”
