Charlotte, N.C. – The Florida Atlantic University softball team stretched its winning streak to six games on Friday. In game one of a three-game set, the Owls defeated Charlotte by a 7-4 final score. FAU improved to 28-22 and 15-7 in Conference USA action, and the six-game winning streak is the highest of the season.
OWLS SCORE EARLY & OFTENThe Owls scored in every inning besides the second. Zoey Jones plated the first run of the day with an RBI double to right field. Two innings later, Olivia Peterson drove home two with an RBI double to stretch the lead to 3-0. The FAU catcher has now driven in 10 runs in the last six games.
The 49ers started a back-and-forth battle with a run in the bottom of the third, but the Owls’ got it right back with an RBI single from Myah Murray in the fourth. Charlotte countered with a run in their half of the fourth, before a 50-minute rain delay struck before the start of the fifth inning.
The rain delay did not slow down the FAU bats, as Kaitlyn Cunningham drove in a run with a base knock in the fifth. After the 49ers pulled within 5-4 with a two-run homer, FAU once again had an answer in the sixth inning.
Jones belted a solo homer to right in the sixth to extend the FAU lead to 6-4. In the seventh, pinch runner Maddie Carlock stole home after the throw went down to second.
Lynn Gardner delivered her 20th complete game of the season to improve to 17-7. Gardner allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Eight out of the nine FAU starters recorded hits, led by Cunningham’s three. Jones went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Maya Amm also recorded a multi-hit day. FAU recorded 12 hits as a team, one off the single-game high for the year.
GAME TWO TOMORROWThe Owls and 49ers will compete in game two tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
