BOCA RATON,Fla. In the rubber game of a three-game set, the Florida Atlantic University softball team was edged in a one-run ballgame by Marshall, 3-2. Marshall takes the series two games to one and improves to 24-10 including 9-6 in conference action. The Owls dip to 21-20 and 9-6 in C-USA play.
CLOSE ONE IN THE RUBBER GAME

The Thundering Herd plated the first two runs of the afternoon with a solo home run and an RBI double in the top of the third inning.

FAU countered with a run in the fourth inning to cut the Marshall lead in half. Sara Berthiaume led off the inning with a base hit to right field. After moving up on a Zoey Jones groundout, Berthiaume was driven in by a Myah Murray base hit.

Murray had a good series this weekend, batting .571 (4-for-7) with two RBI and two walks.

Gabby Sacco, who entered in relief of FAU starter Donnie Gobourne, worked out of trouble in the fifth inning after issuing a pair of walks. With runners on first and second, Sacco escaped by getting a pair of fly outs.

Marshall scored another in the sixth inning with an RBI single. The Owls mounted a threat in the seventh inning. Maya Amm got the inning started with a single, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and passed ball. An infield hit from Kaitlyn Cunningham scored Amm and cut the lead to one, yet Marshall did not allow FAU to get the tying run across.

Berthiaume went 2-for-3 at the plate with the run scored to lead the Owl offense. Gobourne pitched two scoreless innings as today’s starting pitcher, while Sacco took the loss. The freshman allowed two earned runs and struck out two across four innings pitched. Lynn Gardner worked a clean one-two-three seventh inning.
