Coral Gables, FLA. – (Feb. 20, 2019) – The Florida Atlantic University baseball team fell on the road on Wednesday night, 11-4 to Miami.
Quotable
“We have got to play better, we had a number of opportunities to get out of innings and we weren’t able to,” said Head Coach John McCormack.
“Offensively it was the same story, plenty of opportunities and weren’t able to cash in. Credit to Miami, we gave them an opening and they took it. We will be back at work tomorrow to get ready for the weekend.”
The Turning Point
A two-out error in the third eventually led to four unearned Miami (4-0) runs. Though the Owls (3-1) cut the deficit in half their next at-bat, the Hurricanes scored six of the game’s next seven runs to extinguish a possible FAU comeback.
The Finish
Miami relief pitching combined to allow just one run over the final four innings. UM added two solo shots over that time to help cement the win.
The Arms
Hunter Cooley (1-1) took the loss, but posted a career-best four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Vladmir Zavala, Jon Jon Kostantis and Mitchell Hartigan each made their FAU debuts on the hill.
Dylan O’Connell pitched a scoreless seventh.
The Bats
Diamond Johnson and Joe Montes each had two hits
In the run-scoring fourth, Montes had a ground-rule double RBI (plating Andru Summerall, who had singled), with the other run scoring on a Jared DeSantolo groundout.
Johnson scored in the fifth on a Gunnar Lambert sac fly, and again in the seventh when Wilfredo Alvarez doubled to right-center.
