RACE HISTORY:

The first Detroit Grand Prix was in 1982, and it started as a Formula One race through the streets of downtown Detroit before becoming a CART-sanctioned race in 1989. The race moved to Belle Isle in 1992, continuing under the CART/Champ Car banner until 2001. After the success of the Super Bowl in Detroit in 2006, Roger Penske and the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) teamed up to bring an annual national sporting event to the city of Detroit. They spearheaded the return of the Grand Prix in 2007 on Belle Isle. After challenging economic times delayed the event after the 2008 season, the Grand Prix returned in 2012 with Chevrolet as the title sponsor of the event and the current promotional group as a subsidiary of the DDP. The 2019 event marked the 30th Grand Prix in Detroit’s history. The event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but returned in 2021. After decades on Belle Isle, in 2023 the Grand Prix returned to its roots on the Downtown Detroit streets for the first time since 1991.

WINNERS AT THE 2024 DETROIT GRAND PRIX:

The Chevrolet INDYCAR Grand Prix was a spectacle of speed and strategy, boasting nearly 30 more on-track passes than the 2023 race despite more laps run under caution. With passing opportunities in six of the nine turns on the challenging and technical track, the race saw an impressive 217 passes – outshining any other street circuit on the series schedule during the 2024 season by a wide margin. During the 53 green-flag laps, the INDYCAR field averaged over four passes per lap under green, rivaling the excitement of the thrilling Indianapolis 500. Six-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion Scott Dixon displayed his fuel-mileage wizardry and impeccable tire strategy to clinch his record fourth career victory at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship made a sensational debut on the Detroit street circuit, as Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Autosport’s No. 10 Acura claimed the overall victory and the GTP class win. Drivers Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque delivered a masterclass in racing, with Taylor boldly overtaking Mathieu Jaminet’s No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 and leading the final 20 laps to triumph in the Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic. In the GTD PRO class, Laurin Heinrich and Seb Priaulx piloted their Porsche 911 to victory for AO Racing, marking their second consecutive win and extending their championship lead.

The future stars of INDYCAR also shined on the Streets of Detroit as Louis Foster dominated the INDY NXT by Firestone race, leading all 45 laps from the pole for the Andretti Global team. Foster remained composed through four race restarts and kept the competition at bay throughout the 45 laps around the nine-turn temporary street circuit. The victory marked the second consecutive win for Foster, who would go on to claim the 2024 INDY NXT championship.
