RACE HISTORY:

The first Detroit Grand Prix was hosted in 1982 and it started as a Formula One race through the streets of Downtown Detroit before becoming a CART-sanctioned race in 1989. The event moved to Belle Isle in 1992, continuing under the CART/Champ Car banner until 2001. After the success of the Super Bowl in Detroit in 2006, Roger Penske and the Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) teamed up to bring an annual national sporting event to the city of Detroit and spearheaded the return of the Grand Prix in 2007 on Belle Isle. After the recession delayed the event following the 2008 season, the Grand Prix returned in 2012 with Chevrolet as the title sponsor of the event. The 2019 race marked the 30th Grand Prix in Detroit’s history. The event was not held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but it returned in 2021 and every year since. After decades on Belle Isle, the  Grand Prix returned to its roots on the Downtown Detroit streets last summer for the first time since 1991.

WINNERS AT THE 2023 DETROIT GRAND PRIX:

Last year at the Detroit Grand Prix, Chip Ganassi Racing driver Alex Palou etched his name into INDYCAR history as the first winner of the new Downtown Detroit course, as the event returned to the Streets of Downtown Detroit after years on Belle Isle. Palou won from the pole position to capture the 2023 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear for his second victory of the season and his sixth career INDYCAR win.

In the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge race, Canadian Daniel Morad and Bryce Ward drove to victory in the Chevrolet Detroit Sports Car Classic Grand Sport (GS) class 100-minute race on the streets of Detroit. Morad snatched the lead away from RS1 driver Stevan McAleer with 34 minutes remaining in the race. From there, Morad opened a gap and held on for the win. It was both drivers’ first victory in Michelin Pilot Challenge competition.

INDY NXT by Firestone returned to the Motor City for a doubleheader weekend. Rookie Reece Gold earned a dramatic first career victory as he zoomed past the mechanically-challenged car of leader Nolan Siegel on the final straightaway to win Race 1 of the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix ahead of fellow rookie Jagger Jones, grandson of 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner Parnelli Jones, and Ernie Francis Jr. in the No. 99 HMD Motorsports with Force Indy car. All three podium finishers earned the first top-three results of their respective INDY NXT by Firestone careers.

Siegel, the talented INDYCAR NXT rookie, bounced back and earned a measure of redemption after heartbreak in Race 1. Siegel led by more than five seconds with two turns to go in the first race of the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix on June 3 when a driveshaft broke while the checkered flag was waving. He limped across the finish line in eighth place in the 45-lap race won by Reece Gold. In Race 2, Siegel took the lead on Lap 2 and survived two late restarts to win the second race of the INDY NXT by Firestone Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader on June 4. The win marked Siegel’s maiden INDY NXT victory.

IMSA WEATHERTECH SPORTSCAR CHAMPIONSHIP RETURNS TO DETROIT GRAND PRIX IN 2024:

North America’s premier sports car series returns to the Streets of Downtown Detroit in 2024 as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will compete in the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear, May 31-June 1, 2024 featuring the GTP and GTD PRO classes.

Fueled by the momentum of growing global interest in the hybrid-electrified Grand Touring Prototype class (GTP) that made its debut last season, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will race for the first time on the 1.7-mile street circuit in Downtown Detroit after the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Series sports cars competed at the 2023 event. Both the GTP and GTD PRO categories will be racing in the Motor City, bringing back the Cadillac and Corvette brands to compete on their “hometown” track. The GTD PRO class will also feature a battle of the Motor City manufacturers as Corvette takes on the Ford Mustangs for street course supremacy.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

In its return to the Streets of Downtown Detroit for the first time in 32 years, last summer’s Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear attracted an estimated crowd of 150,000 people throughout the three-day weekend motorsports festival in the Motor City. An independent study found that the event brought in a record-breaking $104.4 million in total spending for the Greater Detroit area which includes Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. This summer’s event is expected to generate a similar spending impact locally.

SUSTAINABILITY:

On Earth Day 2024, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear announced initiatives that will make a significant social and environmental impact leading up to and during the May 31-June 2 event weekend in Downtown Detroit. Building on the success of the most sustainable Detroit Grand Prix in history in 2023, this year’s event will feature increased eco-friendly initiatives, to go along with continued community engagement, youth development and support for small businesses.

Last summer’s Detroit Grand Prix drew an estimated crowd of 150,000 people during the three-day motorsports festival in the heart of the Motor City. With support from one of its partners, Penske Truck Rental, the 2023 Grand Prix became the first-ever motorsport event to offset 100% of fan travel carbon emissions by investing in nature-based programs in Michigan and across the Midwest. The Grand Prix and Priority also recycled 14.6 tons of cardboard, bottles and cans, diverted 30.4 tons of waste from local landfills and donated 6.3 tons of prepared, unserved food, packaged snacks and beverages to local food pantries to help feed metro Detroiters in need.

PARTNER SUPPORT:

In 2023, the Grand Prix enjoyed support from a record 86 partner companies as the event returned to its original home in Downtown Detroit. This year’s event will raise the bar event higher as it will surpass that impressive number of local and national corporate partners while continuing to build momentum, support and excitement in the Motor City.

BACK TO THE STREETS IN 2024:

The 34th Grand Prix event in the city’s history will return to the 1.7-mile, nine-turn Streets of Downtown Detroit circuit that runs along the award-winning Detroit Riverwalk, May 31-June 2, 2024. The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear will once again offer an inclusive experience for fans as more than half of the event’s footprint will be open and accessible for free throughout the three-day weekend. On Comerica Bank Free Prix Day, visitors will be able to watch all the Friday on-track action from two of the most coveted viewing locations – in Grandstands 1 and 9 – at no cost. Seating in these grandstands overlooking pit lane and the start/finish line on the 1.7-mile Downtown street circuit will be general admission and available on a first-come, first-seated basis.
