DETROIT PISTONS ACQUIRE TIM HARDAWAY JR. AND THREE FUTURE SECOND ROUND DRAFT SELECTIONS FROM DALLAS IN EXCHANGE FOR QUENTIN GRIMES

DETROIT, Mich. (July 6, 2024) – The Detroit Pistons announced today that the club has acquired guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and three future second round draft selections from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for guard Quentin Grimes. 

Hardaway Jr., 6-5, 202, is an 11-year NBA veteran and has appeared in 736 games (345 starts) for New York, Atlanta and Dallas. The 32-year-old guard holds career averages of 14.0 points (.418 FG), 2.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 27.3 minutes per game. In 42 career playoff appearances, Hardaway Jr. has averaged 9.1 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 22.2 minutes per game.

The Alameda, Calif., native spent the last six seasons with the Dallas Mavericks and averaged 15.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists while shooting 41.7% from the field and 37.3% from 3-point range in 352 games (183 starts). Last season, Hardaway Jr. appeared in 79 games (12 starts) and averaged 14.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 26.8 minutes per game while helping the Mavericks reach the NBA Finals. Hardaway Jr. finished top-10 in Sixth Man of the Year voting twice during his six years with Dallas (2020-21, 2023-24) and made the NBA Playoffs in four of his six seasons. 

The 24th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft started his NBA career with the New York Knicks, where he was named to the 2014 NBA All-Rookie First Team.  Prior to his NBA career, Hardaway Jr. played three seasons at the University of Michigan, where he was named First Team All-Freshman in 2010-11 and First Team All-Big Ten in 2012-13.  He helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA Final Four and National Championship game in 2013.

Grimes, 6-5, 205, appeared in six games for Detroit last season and averaged 5.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 19.2 minutes per game.  Prior to his time in Detroit, Grimes appeared in 162 games (90 starts) over three seasons with the New York Knicks and averaged 8.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 23.6 minutes.  A native of Houston, Texas, Grimes was selected 25th overall in the 2021 NBA Draft out of the University of Houston.
