LANSING – The Country Club of Lansing, which features a classic William Langford-designed course that dates to 1921, will host the state’s top women golfers in the 22nd GAM Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Monday and Tuesday.
In addition to the traditional Mid-Amateur Division of golfers over age 25 and the Senior Division for golfers over 50, golfers ages 19 to 24 have been added to the field for the second consecutive year to give them another GAM playing opportunity.
The three age-group winners will be identified via 36 holes of stroke play, and the overall low gross scorer in the Mid-Amateur Division will have her name engraved on the Jeanne L. Myers Trophy.
Defending champion Audrey Akins of LaSalle, Ontario, will be unable to defend her title this year because of COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions on the U.S.-Canada border.
Country Club of Lansing has a time-tested championship golf course, and at the same time is family oriented and offers a full range of amenities, including a driving range, tennis courts, fitness facility, swimming and dining.
Founded in 1908, The Lansing Golf Club was formed by a group of 17 men. In 1920 members acquired 160 acres of land that adjoined the club and Langford, a nationally known golf course architect of the time, was commissioned to develop the new course layout. The Chicago Park Builders were engaged to construct the course, and the new clubhouse which was designed by Samuel Butterworth. In 1921 a new opening and a new name emerged – the Country Club of Lansing.
In 1999 a $7 million renovation to the clubhouse helped the club continue to provide a traditional country club lifestyle for its membership, their families and guests. The course plays to a maximum of 6,889 yards from the championship tee positions.

As for the Mid-Amateur, Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll of Haslett, the 10-time champion of the tournament and the head coach of the Michigan State University women’s golf team, is in the field this year after missing last year’s tournament. University of Michigan head women’s golf coach Jan Dowling of Ann Arbor is also playing.
Two other former Mid-Am champions, Julie Massa of Holt (2013) and Joan Garety of Ada (2004), are returning, and last year’s Senior Division winner Marcy Roth of Grand Rapids and last year’s 19-to-24 winner Yurika Tanida, an MSU golfer, are back to compete.
