One of the hottest young coordinators in the FBS led FAU to top 20 nationally ranked scoring and total offense seasons;
Owls posted 36.4 ppg in 2019 to rank 14th nationally
TAMPA, Dec. 23, 2019 – USF head football coach Jeff Scott announced Monday the addition of Charlie Weis, Jr. to his first Bulls’ staff as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.
Weis has spent the last two seasons as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach under Lane Kiffin at FAU, helping to lead the Owls to the 2019 Conference USA Championship and offenses ranked in the top 20 in scoring and total offense. FAU capped an 11-3 season in 2019 with a 52-28 rout of SMU in the Boca Raton Bowl in which the Owls put up 522 yards, including 333 through the air, and scored 33 unanswered points.
“Charlie is incredibly detailed, knowledgeable and creative in his offensive scheme and does a tremendous job of coaching student-athletes and preparing them to execute at a high level,” Scott said. “Similar to myself, Charlie grew up in football and has had a front row seat to observe and learn from some incredibly successful organizations and people. His intelligence and energy will be a great addition to our program and I look forward to working with him as we produce a dynamic and explosive Bulls offense.”
Weis’ 2019 offense ranks 14th nationally in scoring (36.4 ppg) and 27th in total offense (448.6 ypg). Sophomore quarterback Chris Robinson ranked 6th nationally in passing yards and 16th in passing touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions. Robinson set FAU season records with 3,701 yards passing and 291 completions, adding 28 touchdown passes. FAU tight end Harrison Bryant won the Mackey Award as the nation’s top tight end was a unanimous first team All-American after posting 65 receptions for 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Owls posted 6,280 total yards and 65 touchdowns on the 2019 season, gaining 3,956 through the air and 2,742 on the ground. FAU routed UAB, 49-6, in the C-USA Championship, the largest margin of victory in league title game history.
Weis’ 2018 Owl offense ranked 14th nationally in total offense (478.8 ypg) and 13th in rushing (241.8 ypg) as running back Devin Singletary finished 11th nationally in rushing yards (1,348) and yards per game (112.3 ypg) and second with 22 rushing touchdowns. Robinson earned C-USA Freshman of the Year honors in his first season under center.
Prior to arriving at FAU, Weis had stops with two NFL organizations, the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, and three other universities, including Alabama, Kansas and Florida.
Weis served as an offensive analyst for the defending NFC Champion Falcons during the 2017 season, after a short stint as FAU’s tight end coach from December 2016 to February 2017.
He served two seasons (2015 & 2016) as an offensive analyst under head coach Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Kiffin at Alabama, working with the Tide’s quarterbacks and running backs. At Alabama, Weis was a part of a 30-2 record, winning two SEC Championships and one National Championship and worked directly with Heisman Trophy-winning running back Derrick Henry during the 2015 season. Weis provided in-season details on opponent’s defensive schemes, worked with in-game communications for adjustments, aided in national recruiting efforts for the running backs and aided in offseason fourth quarter program on speed and agility drills.
Prior to Alabama, Weis spent three seasons (2012-14) as an undergraduate team manager on his father Charlie Weis’ staff at the University of Kansas. He assisted the position coaches in practice by administering and directing drills, ran position meetings for the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers and led opponent breakdown.
He gained extra experience in 2014 (July-August) as a New England Patriots Volunteer Training Camp intern. In that role, he worked with the offensive staff and assisted tight end coach Brian Daboll creating highlight and lowlight cutups and coordinating quarterback practice production notes.
Weis also served as an offensive quality control coach at the University of Florida (2011), focusing his efforts with the wide receivers.
Weis, born April 29, 1993, earned his BS in psychology with a minor in sociology from the University of Kansas in 2015. He and his wife, Jennifer, will reside in Tampa. His father, Charlie, served as head coach at Notre Dame and Kansas and was a longtime NFL assistant, including serving as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots (2000-04) during three Super Bowl winning seasons.

The USF football program first took the field in 1997 and is in its 23rd season (20th at the FBS level) in 2019. The Bulls have posted 15 winning seasons, earned 14 All-America selections and 29 first-team all-conference selections and has seen 30 players selected in the NFL Draft.USF has made 10 bowl games appearances (going 6-4 in those games) and posted a program record six straight appearances from 2005-2010.
