The Special Teams Player of the Week award was given to UAB K Matt Quinn, who was perfect in his collegiate debut, going 6-for-6 on PAT’s and adding a field goal. Wells completed 16-of-23 passes for 307 yards, four touchdown passes and no interceptions in just two and a half quarters of action in a 59-0 win over Eastern Kentucky. He also rushed for 30 yards on six carries. Wells, who completed his first eight passes, became the first Marshall quarterback with 300-plus passing yards in a debut, exceeding the previous record of 292 by Stan Hill vs Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 11, 2002. Wells tied the school record for most passing touchdowns in a debut with four, equaling the mark set by Hill vs. Miami and Chase Litton vs. Norfolk State in 2015. The Charleston, West Virginia native helped lead an offensive attack that generated 627 yards of total offense, 34 first downs and did not punt in a game for the first time since October 21, 2006 vs. UAB.
Davis recorded a team-high nine tackles (seven solo), one sack, a tackle for loss and two quarterback hurries in North Texas’ 57-31 season-opening win over HBU. The Ennis, Texas, native anchored a defense during its first game under new defensive coordinator Clint Bowen. The Mean Green defense only allowed 89 yards on the ground during the course of the game and allowed a pair of late HBU scores after the game had been decided.
In Quinn’s collegiate debut, the redshirt freshman kicker was perfect, going 6-for-6 on PAT attempts and making his only field goal attempt from 23 yards in the Blazers season-opening win over Central Arkansas. The Spanish Fort, Alabama, native scored nine points in his first career game.
