USF defeated Memphis, 5-3, for its fifth straight series win, and will go for its fifth sweep tomorrow at 11 a.m.
TAMPA, April 27, 2019 – USF clinched its fifth straight series and tightened its grip on the top spot in The American with a 5-3 win over Memphis on Saturday evening. The Bulls will attempt its fifth sweep in tomorrow’s series finale against Memphis at 11 a.m.
USF (37-15, 15-2) jumped ahead early, scoring two runs in the first inning. Senior Lindsey Devitt (Jacksonville, Fla.) led off getting hit by a pitch for the second straight game, and singles by junior AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) and senior Macy Cook (Unionown, Ohio) loaded the bases. Sophomore Kyndall Williams (Trenton, Fla.) entered for Devitt, and redshirt sophomore Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) hit a double just inside the line at right field that scored Williams and Bruni for a 2-0 lead.
The Bulls added to the action in the bottom of the fourth when Brooke Leistl opened the frame with an infield single, and Williams followed suit with another single. Freshman Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) walked to load the bases, and Bruni was hit by a pitch to score a run. Keen walked to score another for her third RBI of the day and Filla put down a sacrifice bunt with the bases loaded to add one more run.
The Tigers (22-28, 3-13) tried to come back in the top of the sixth with a three-RBI double to left center, but senior pitcher Cheyenne Eggens (Vienna, Ohio) shut down their chances with the final six outs of the game for a save.
Senior Nicole Doyle (Aurora, Ohio) earned her 11th win of the season, her sixth straight. She walked just one batter and retired 21, limiting the tigers to three hits.
