USF shut out the Knights for a War on I-4 sweep in Orlando, claiming the top spot in the conference with a 10-2 record in The American
ORLANDO, April 14, 2019 – USF completed its third straight sweep and broke the tie for the lead in The American with a 10-2 record, taking down UCF in three straight games in the War on I-4 in Orlando.
Scoreless through four innings, the Bulls bats exploded with a pair of back-to-back homers in the fifth inning. USF (32-15, 10-2) took a 1-0 lead when senior Lindsey Devitt (Jacksonville, Fla.) crushed a ball over the fence at left center. Junior AnaMarie Bruni answered with a homerun of her own over the fence at right center, doubling the Bulls lead, 2-0.
Redshirt Sophomore Bethaney Keen (Bradenton, Fla.) continued the action when she reached first on an error, and freshman Jaycie Michael (Mt. Dora, Fla.) entered to pinch run. Michael stole second, and advanced to third on an obstruction error by the second baseman. She scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Tayli Filla (Ft. Myers, Fla.) before the end of the inning, giving the Bulls a 3-0 lead to close out the fifth.
The Knights had a few close chances including two plays made at home made by senior catcher Macy Cook (Uniontown, Ohio) who was relentless, not letting the Knights cross home a single time.
Sophomore pitcher Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) started her third game of the week and took the circle for the first time since pitching 13 innings in Friday’s win. Corrick tossed six scoreless frames for the Bulls in the series finale and struck out seven. Senior Nicole Doyle (Aurora, Ohio) relived Corrick in the seventh inning and sent two batters back to the dugout before senior Cheyenne Eggens (Vienna, Ohio) entered for the final out to complete the Bulls’ shutout win.
