HOUSTON, March 31, 2019 – Sophomore Georgina Corrick struck out 13 in USF’s 3-0 shutout win in the series finale to sweep Houston on Sunday afternoon.
USF (26-14, 4-2) got on the board in the third inning with a run by junior Kelsey Lay (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Lay singled to right field, advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt and scored when junior AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) hit a ball to the shortstop who committed a throwing error, giving Lay a chance to score.
Lay crossed home for a second time in the top of the fifth inning. She hit her second single of the day, stole second and advanced to third on an error by Houston. Bruni hit a single to center field that scored Lay, and freshman Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hill, Md.) hit the same spot to score Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) who pinch hit for Dezarae Maldonado (Winter Haven, Fla.) and drew a walk.
Sophomore Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) struck out 13, 11 swinging, for her fifth double-digit strikeout game this season. Corrick notched her 14th win of the season, and fourteenth in her last 15 games. She faced 26 batters and walked just one, limiting the Cougars (24-12, 2-4) to just four hits.
