TAMPA, March 6, 2023 – Left-hander Payton Dixon (Smyrna, Del.) set a new career high nine strike outs in the University of South Florida softball team’s 2-0 win on Monday night.
In her ninth career start, Dixon quickly settled in the game, striking out the first two batters she faced. Army wouldn’t get a hit until the third inning.
Dixon and Army’s Oliva Farris went into a pitching duel, neither allowing more than one hit through the first three innings.
Marissa Trivelpiece (Sugarloaf, Pa.) started the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple over the center fielder’s head. A single from Alyssa Rano (Seminole) hit a single that bounced off the pitcher’s glove, allowed Trivelpiece to score.
Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hills, Md.) doubled to left field in the sixth inning. She advanced on Rano’s second hit of the night. Camille Ortiz-Martinez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) brought Sheehan home on a sacrifice fly.
NOTABLES
- This the fourth time the Bulls have shut out their opponent this season.
- Ortiz-Martinez had nine putouts today.
- As a team, the Bulls were a home run away from hitting for the cycle.
- Emilee Hanlon (Dunkirk, N.Y.) and Rano led with two hits.
- Dixon did not allow a single walk in the game.

South Florida will continue their home stretch with a double header midweek game against the University of Pennsylvania tomorrow for International Night. The first game is set for 3 p.m. The first 100 fans will receive walking tacos.
