Bryce Dillard Feature Story

Bryce Dillard is the director of women’s basketball operations at the University of Alabama. He
explains his job as being the right-hand man to head coach Kristy Curry.
“I have to reach out to facilities to make sure the goals are put up, I have to reach out to our
scheduler for athletics and make sure we have a place to practice, and it kind of just goes on
and on from there,” said Dillard.
The general assistant of the team, Finaly Clark, confirms his efforts keep things running smooth.
“Bryce does anything and everything to keep us all organized. He keeps the program running
where it needs to be off the floor so everyone else can focus on what they need to do on the
floor,” said Clark.
With the amount of responsibility Dillard has on his plate, it comes as no surprise that he is
busy. He spoke to length about the demands of his job, or any job in athletics. Anyone doing a
job that takes the level of time commitment needs to have a purpose that drives them.
“All the stress that I go through is for the players and to put them in the best position possible to
perform,” said Dillard. “Whether that means getting a nice hotel, what food we are eating, or
whatever it could be it is just making sure they are in the best position possible. Having that kind
of role and influence is the important part of my job.”
His passion for sports and players started young, coming from his basketball coach mother. He
said growing up around it gave him direction. His journey started at The University of Georgia as
a student manager and continued on to fall in place.
“I was there for three years and that coach was nice enough to ask me to be her grad assistant.
A grad assistant is like a step above a manager so you are now on staff getting more
responsibility, but you are still a student. After that I became a DOBO at Mercer University. After
two years of doing that the coach I work for now wanted me to be her video coordinator, which I
was excited about just to do something different. After a year of that the DOBO left and the
coach asked me to take over,” said Dillard.
He has received positive results and feedback since taking on this position. The video
coordinator, Sydney-Anne Cottrell, further confirms that with nothing but kind words to say about
Dillard.
“Bryce is a vital part of our program. He handles all logistics while being an amazing mentor to
our athletes,” said Cottrell.
Dillard spends his time doing anything asked of him, and still makes time to help students
interested in a similar field. Though he went to an opposing SEC school that should not be
named, his addition to Tuscaloosa and its community remains clear through his work.
