Broward Schools launch Here Comes the Bus
From David Volz
The Broward County Public Schools Student Transportation and Fleet Services Department is excited to launch Here Comes the Bus on Thursday, September 15.. The free and easy-to-use website and application allow parents and guardians to view the location of their child’s school bus in real-time on a smartphone, tablet or personal computer.
Parents and guardians will use the School District code and student’s last name and ID number to gain access to their student’s bus only. The system is password-protected and available in English, Spanish and French.
Users will be able to sign up to receive notifications that:
- Include the bus number, location and time of arrival at the bus stop
- Can be customized to a radius of 250 feet to 2 miles from the bus stop location
- Confirm the student’s bus has arrived at the bus stop and at school, both before and after school.
Additionally, parents with multiple children can conveniently track each child’s bus information within one account.
New Bicycle Shop opens in downtown Hollywood
From David Volz
Henry Angulo and Balam Cardona, owners of Hollywood Bicycle Shop at 1878 Tyler Street, have always been interested in transportation.
The South American-born, Angulo from Venezuela, Cardona from Colombia business partners met many years ago in Miami, while they were both working in the automotive industry. In 2012, they traded in their gas-powered wheels for people-powered ones, and opened their first bicycle shop in Haulover Park.
Additional locations in Miami, Homestead and Hollywood Beach soon followed. This October, their celebration of 10 years in business will coincide with the grand opening of their newest store, the Hollywood Bicycle Shop, in Downtown Hollywood.
“When we saw the opportunity near Young Circle, we loved it! We saw the plans for all the new development in the next five years, and know there will be a need for more retail in Downtown Hollywood.”
Angulo said that the Hollywood Bicycle Shop was one of the first to sell electric bikes in south Florida, and that it remains one of the biggest in the area. They feature top electric brands from all over the world — sticking with established companies, he noted, so they can be confident of their warrantees and availability of parts — as well as traditional bikes for both children and adults. Prices for electric models start at about $1,500 with unmotorized bikes starting at around $350. Recently, the store has also increased its offerings in scooters, and folding, road, mountain, and city bikes.
“Our goal is to offer all the same models as traditional bikes, but in electric,” he explained. Traditional bikes make up about 25% of the store’s stock.
The Hollywood Bicycle Shop also offers a wide variety of extra services including bicycle assembly, tune-ups, problem diagnosis ($50 – $160), repairs, and rentals, with delivery and pick up available for an additional fee.
The Hollywood Bicycle Shop is open from 10 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, and from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday.
